Hi Everyone,

I'm new to fishkeeping - other than a goldfish in my parents pond a long while back - but I don't think that counts!!

I've always loved watching sealife programmes and had a desire to have my own fish tank set-up, but for one reason or another (namely money, time and space!!) have never got round to it.

My fiancee bought me a tank and supplies (no fish you'll be pleased to hear!!) for my birthday last year so I finally started my trip into tropical fishkeeping.

I've got loads of questions s will be around a bit - want to take a look round the site first to see if I can answer them myself first!! I hope I'll find everything as useful as it appears from a first look.

Keep an eye out for me and more details on my set-up later.

Cheers,
Barry

Thanks for the welcomes.

MM - I've got my tank well stocked now, my worry is I might have overstocked! I'm trying to find the volume of my tank so I can ask on the forum!!

Have got zebra danios, tetras, honey gouramis and a couple others at the mo... What have you got in yours?

Hello Barry and welcome to the forum. :hi:

Here is a link to a site that lists standard tanks, their volume and weight. But it's simply length x width x height to get the tank volume. Then multiply by 7.48 if you used feet for your calculations or .004329 if you used inches (here is a good conversion site too). As to being overstocked, there are a lot of factors to consider including the type of fish you have (are they big waste producers like plecs or oscars), filtration (how many times an hour does your filter process the water - minimum is 5) and your maintenance program (how often you do water changes). I think you will enjoy the forum. You can use the search tool to find old threads or ask questions. Most everyone is friendly and more than willing to help.

Hi Barry,

Have you convinced your girlfiend to get a tank as well yet? I have some pearl danios and some sterbai corys in my tank and just can't decide on the last few fish, which is good fun in a way because it means I can keep going to my local shop and taking a look. So many lovely fishes to choose from - can see why 1 tank can become many so quickly! Trouble is we have such a small house there's no room for more unless all the CDs get sold - and how likely is it that you can part a man from his cd collection?
I know I haven't had the fish for long, but I can't imagine not having them. The danios are curious, pushy and way more intelligent than I expected. They definitely think they are top fish and they don't seem to realise that they're only a few cms long. The corys are sweet, laidback and ought to stand up for themselves ('cept havin' fins makes that a bit tricky) a bit more. Have your danios bossed your gourami? (another candidate for the tank y'see)
Hmmmm... yep... I can see I could become fish obsessed. Maybe i should get out more
:)
