I have a 100 litre tank with 5 bumblee gobys, 5 dwarf puffers, 2 otos, a symiese algae eater, 2 khulie loaches, and one male red eye red tail puffer (Carinotetraodon irrubesco).

I bought two at first thinkin it was a male and a female but i soon found out that one was male but a diferent type of red eye, he was more aggresive attacking everything, even the khuli loaches. Anyway i took him back and kept the true irrubesco but the shop didnt have anymore females.. just a batch of males with the red tails where left.

Now the woman in the shop said i could buy a another male this time makin sure its the irrubesco n not the lorti or whateva its caled, but she said they would b less likely to fight if i had them in a group. now this is where i need you guys help.. is this true? and how many of them would b considered a group? id b willing to rehome some of my other fish to have a tank just for these guys.. but i have no idea how many.. maybe 4 males? or wud that b trouble? get back to me please guyss.. especialy nealee lol

This might help til you get some replys...they seem to differ with aggrestion, i was looking a while ago at avacado puffers<Auriglobus modestus but until i can get another tank im going to wait, most puffers are best kept in a species tank

ok link didnt work,,just google and read puffer forum

I can only speak from my personal experiences here, but I had a pair of males in a 90L tank and they battered each other so much I would never have a pair of males in the same tank again unless I had alot more females to go along with them. Even then I would prefer to just have one male and several females.
Neale Monks has these puffers (or had) and has good experience with them.
I would love to have some again one day but I can't help being wary of any puffer in a mixed species tank.
I have two F8s in with a swarm of bumblebee gobies and some Florida Flagfish and they're all fine, ut I still find myself doing a head count every evening

Sharz,

The best way to get my attention is to write in regular English I'm afraid. I'm a guy of a certain age, and anything remotely close to teenager text speak just makes me roll my eyes! Perhaps it's jealousy about not being a teenager, and having a bit less hair, but a bit more bulk, than I did when I was 18. Or maybe I'm just a snob. Sorry to be like that, but I am.

Anyway, it's quite possible you have Carinotetraodon lorteti alongside Carinotetraodon irrubesco. Here in England at least it is very common for them to be sold alongside each other, usually under just one of those two names. The males are very easy to tell apart, since male Carinotetraodon lorteti have bluish tails and Carinotetraodon irrubesco red tails. The females are trickier to tell apart, but the bellies on female Carinotetraodon lorteti are plain white, while the bellies of female Carinotetraodon irrubesco bear short brown squiggles.

So far as keeping them in groups is concerned, I have two male and two female Carinotetraodon irrubesco in my 180 litre aquarium. They mostly work fine, with only occasional squabbles between the males. In smaller tanks, things are less certain. But in 100 litres, I'd have thought one male and two females would be fine.

Cheers, Neale

i appreciate the help but is their anyneed to be a grinch all of the time? I remember a while ago when i first started keeping fish i said that i had a bala shark in a 60litre tank and you told me to go n buy a toy of a shark if i loved them so much! anyway thans for the help.. but the shop doesnt have any females left, just males, so havin 3 or 4 males wouldnt work would it? as i was thinkin in a little group they may not attack eachother. one more thing, my irubesco is attacking my dwarfs puffers, is this normal? as i used to have a tank with dwarf puffers and an irubesco n he never used to attack the dwarfs..

If you want to catch mice, you bait your trap with cheese. All I'm saying is that in the short amount of time I spend here at TFF, the messages I go for are the ones written nicely. Not a criticism of you or anyone else. Simply saying that I usually ignore messages written in text-speak.

For what it's worth, I was right about the bala shark.

Cheers, Neale

I have a male and female irrubesco in my community tank. They rarely bother the other fish, maybe the very occasional nip at the tails if they are hungry.

Mostly, the male diverts all his aggression towards the female. I hear that males can be aggressive towards each other too, but I have no experience of this, so cannot comment. I was considering adding a couple more females to spread out the aggression but the shop only had males left, the last time I was there.
