Just For Fun - What's The Biggest Whopper A Lfs Has Told You?

Okay lol perhaps I am giving people too much credit!

The biggest whooper I have been told was when I was looking at the tanks and went to leave and one of the employees pulled me up and said "wanna see this cool fish?"
I was like "sure why not"
He went and got a Black Ghost Knife fish who had just finished acclimatizing and put him in a tank, the tank was filled with neon tetras and the BGK was about 3-4 inches big. I started talking to the guy, seeing how knowledgeable he was, and, just for fun, I asked if the BGK would be able to go in my 21 litre tank with an Oscar and, to my surprise, the guy said "yes".
I looked at a sign above the tank that had some basic requirements for a BGK and I asked "this says here that they get up to 40 cm and need a tank of 500 litres, would my tank still be okay?"
The dumb employee said "Yes, it would. They were typos, it should really say 4cm and 20L"
no.gif

That was a true facepalm moment for me, the BGK was obviously bigger than 4cm already.;
I left the shop feeling stunned at the stupidity of the employee.
Now that I think back on it, I should have probably told him what the BGK really needs but I was just too stunned to think of anything at the time.

Lol Daize! It has got to a point now where I will go out of my way to congratulate people on epic looking tanks (even average looking tanks are epic if the customer actually cares about the tank and hobby!!) and will outright tell them how impressed I am at their level of knowledge and tell them that it is customers like themselves that keep the fishkeeping hobby something worth being part of. This generally leads to me being tied up for hours (oops!) with a customer just talking about fish and different methods and cool things we have seen.

For someone with a real interest in the hobby, I will go right out of my way to do anything I can to help. But I can still count that many customers on my fingers. Depressing really but they make it worth it :) and I learn a lot from customers!

That really sounds fantastic - good on you!

I guess it's true, I popped into my local LFS today with my 3yo in tow and the only other customers were about three other families with toddlers who were clearly not there to buy anything and the staff looked bored.  I felt guilty lol even though I hadn't taken my child there for his amusement, he has very limited patience when I drag him around fish shops and he's usually the one who wants to go home while I gawp at the fish :D

I was always the one still dragging my parents into fish shops long after they had stopped keeping them!  Eventually it did lead to me keeping fish, so eventually at least some of those kids may well grow up to be fish keepers.

Guilty as charged, m'lud. I often used to take my littl'un in to various LFS to keep him amused, before he started school. One of my local MAs has a Giant Gourami that will attempt to nibble your fingers if you press them against the glass of his tank, he used to love it.

Can you feel my glare?! :p bet you have some control over your child at least... or that he has manners :) hasn't he got his own tanks now?

I take my little one to the LFS, but that's because she likes to play with the children of one of the staff (family business), and the ramp in the shop.

The fish she doesn't generally bother with, she has them at home.

"Yeah, your swordtail's not eating because he needs live food. Try giving him some feeder fish. They will be great for him."
Oh yeah?

Years ago when I was still at school:

"Oh yes, Convict Cichlids are great in a general community tank, and you can have three or four in your 125litre tank, no problems"

Three weeks later. No more fish except for 1m & 1f & babies.

Yes I can, please stop, it's scaring me.
Yes I do.
Yes he has.
No he hasn't, not chancing it after he decided to help with feeding, and emptied an entire sachet of Sera Vipaflakes into the big tank......

I'll admit to taking my daughter around our LFS too. Of course, she's very well behaved, although she does like telling other customers the Latin names of the fish they're looking at in a rather loud voice

She's eight!

I haven't ever really had bad advice in an LFS; mainly because I haven't asked for advice since about 1989!

This happened to me the other day.

Me: Why are there plastic fish bags filled with water in your tanks (no fish in them and top sticking out of hood)
LFS: Its water change time. I fill them with tap water.
Me: Oh... Why is there no dechlorinator in it?
LFS: You don't need dechlorinator. Just leaving the bag sitting there for 30 mins will allow all the chlorine to leave the bag
