hey every one,
i just bought a male blue ram for my bf, as i know hes wanted one for a long time, as a presant/saprise for him when he comes home in 2 weeks, he is in a 60L tank with 10 american flags and 4 pepperd corys, all fish are bout 1cm in size. in 2 weeks they will all be split up in2 2x 60L tanks. the american flags will go in one n the corys in the other with the blue ram, i was thinking should i get a female blue ram as well? they are $15 here for a 1cm sized fish. all opinions welcome and much appreciated.

thanks in advance ally.

yea theyr all so cute! but none of these are mine. so i thought being so small it would be ok to keep them all together (plus an extra female blue ram) for two weeks till the are all seperated. none look stressed, encluding the male blue ram who only went in an hr ago, hes actualy extremely friendly swims up to me every time i look at the tank ( hehehe he might not go home with my bf after all i have fallen in love with a fish!, lol na course hell go home with my bf as i bought the ram for him especially) i didnt relize hed be so friendly so quickley.

Hi VampirePlec,

Keeping 1 male Ram is too lonely, you should at least get another female Ram. At US$15 per Ram is quite costly for what I can get for the same fish at S$1.50=US95cents and the gold balloon ram at S$2.50=US1.60. Farm breed Rams are friendly because basically when they see you, they know that food is coming.

Good choice for keeping blue ram, I am sure you guys will have lots of joys in keeping them. :good:

Ramfish

yes $15AU is expensive especialy whein it is bought at the same size as most tetras, but i know my bf loves these fish. i have decided to get a female for him, as i too agree its too lonely just to have the one, but i had to see if my other half was happy getting a female, n if he deffinantly had the room (i was trying to comvince him to get a female wit out letting on what fish i got him, even tho he guessed in the end lol) but everything worked out perfectly i was gonna head down to my LFS tofday but then i relized it is a monday, the only day the aquarium is closed, so he will have to wait for his girl till tomorow.
o and ramfish, your rams are beautifull.

i got some rams the other day, none are friendly with me or the other rams :( they fighwith each other, all are about 1" big and there are only 3 in my 63US gallon tank. T  wo of tem have developed teritorys however the other is stuck in the middle being chased all the time!, more plantss hould do the trick. If they are only 1cm long how can you tell male and female apart? i had trouble with allof mine being 1" when i picked them.

i just asked the aquariumist that i wanted a male, and he did tell me how to pick them, i think the males fins are more an orange colour when they are very small, and the females arnt as colourefull. being so small they have very little colour, but the male has the matelic blue kinda like spots, were as the female doesnt, the female just looks almost white in colour. more plants should do the trick, it does for most fish, but i am only new to cichlids, the male blue ram being my first. there is him and two male american flags n they fight over teritory all the time. he just pointed out what ones were male and scooped up the prettys one. do you know what sex they are? it is best to keep one male and the rest females, as the males get very aggressive towards eachother. other than that they are a very peaceful fish, one of the most peaceful out of all the cichlids as i have heard. as i said i am only new to cichlids and am just going by what most people have told me, but this advice has been very helpfull so far! tomorow im off to the aquarium again to get the blue ram a girl. gsta13 good luck with your rams and i am sure they will be friendly in no time, especialy when they work out who feedds them lol.

o n the male has more black, and a purplish coloured tummy, and the female has a pinkish tummy, more red when ready to breed. hehe and i finally got the blue ram female yay. and my american flags are wanting to breed. it has been a good day.

Hi VampirePlec,

Thanks for your compliment. I have a great sentimental value for my Rams  because those are the fishes I first bought for my girlfriend then( Now my wife already), she loves them so much and the Rams keep her company while I am away to work. I broke her heart once when I took away the Rams when we are not in good term and ended up killing the Rams. Those newly bought Golden Balloon Rams are for my wife though they can't replace the Rams( They are with red lips and fins) we have lost.

Hope that whatever happen between you and your boyfriend, please do not repeat my mistake.

I will be paying $9 per ram when I pick them up, they are about 4cm long.

I saw some there for $15 like what you paid Vampire, but they were imported ones.

i dont think i would do anything like that, mayb if it was something else, but not the fish they were a gift no matter what happins, tho im not sure if hell get them when he comes home cause i have fallin in love with them  , ofcourse i will give them to him lol. well lately we have been talking bout getting engaged, and getting our own place together, no other people, lots more fish!
maybe its a brisbane / melbourne thing? i thougt it might have been abit expensive but from what i remember where i bought them was the cheepest.

Yeah maybe they are more readily available in Melb? Thats why they could be cheaper.

Hope you get married. I am married and its the best thing!
