atm i have a cycled internal filter but the last few days ive been seeing a nitrite spike (missus overfed i belive)

would it be better to run the 2 together for a while or just chuck as much of the old media in with the new external?

Hi DJ ArKaDaRkA :)

I'll move this over to the Hardward section since it isn't getting any responses here. My post will raise it to the top of the list too. :D

Sounds like you haven't transferred the media, meaning that you have removed all of the beneficial bacteria from the tank
How long ago did you remove the old filter? if its been turned off for a few days then you may well have just lost all your bacteria and the tank will need to be cycled again unless you have some mature media from a running filter

i did put 2 whole course sponges in the new filter from my old internal

its running almost silent now and im so glad i got rid of the internal

When I upgraded tank, I ran the old internal filter alongside the new external for about 2 weeks, removed internal just over 2 weeks ago and all is good.
