Breaking News
Got a glimpse yesterday of a Mantis! in one of the bottom rocks of the reef, i had heard the dreaded clunking noise before but thought it was the boxfish sucking the glass, anyway i came home from work to find a hermit crab pulled clean out of its shell and half munched so i got it with the feeder stick and waggled it at the mantis burrow entrance.
Within seconds it flew out and grabbed the crab and i couldn't believe the power these things have, i tried to pull it from hiding but did not have any luck so removed the rock with alot of re-organising. I then tried the usual sparkling water trick but this did not work so i resulted to the old fastioned method of hammer and chisel which worked like a dream
The Mantis is about 2.5" long and now in a bucket along with a giant bristleworm also found in the rock. One thing i did notice though is that the Mantis is black? only picture i have seen is of the Peacock which is quite colourful and a sandy specimen.
