Jen's Low Tech 10g Planted Tank

nice tank so far and if your big tank is anything to go by im sure it will get even better, i saw that plant at an lfs earlier today as well and i cant for the life of me remember what it was called! Someone had better work it out before i go to bed or i wont sleep. Love the betta also, hes a beauty.

think the mystery plant would be bacopa carolina

Yes thats what i would say too. Looks nice when tightly planted Jen. Really easy to proporgate, so you may only have several stems now, keep cutting and re-planting and you'l end up with a thick cluster of Bocopa.

Great thanks guys.

Do you have any ideas for rock placement? I'm never sure with odd numbers... I like symetry.

I prefer arranging the rocks in a cluster that is slightly to the left of center. My left. But that's just me. I usually don't like equal spacing in my rocks. George is much better at this. I'm serious, I'd ask him. I agree, the plant looks like Bacopa carolina. Cut and replant until you have tons more.

Nice betta, too. Reminds me of my Gunther.

llj :)

Quick update.

I seem to be getting an interesting type of algae in the tank. Long and whispy.

Any ideas on how to get rid of it?

I think it's hair algae. You can just pull it out. A very cute tank! I like it- and adorable inhabitants too.

I have pulled as much as I can, but I want to know how to keep it from coming back.

Thanks. I love my boy. Still can't find a name that fits him though.

I seem to get this when I OD iron, and I think Zig got a huge infestation when he chucked in a hand full of ferts into his tank rather then the teaspoon he was supposed too!

I also find shrimp love the stuff.

Sam

I am using Eco-complete for my substrate now, and I don't know the exact things it contains, so I would guess iron could be playing a part in this.

anykind of shrimp in particular? The store I normally shop in only has ghost shrimp.

Yeh the EC does contain iron and quite a bit, but it should be released slowly over time. That said I got quite a bit of this thread stuff when I first switched to EC.

All the normal shrimp will do, but the standard amano shrimp is the best for algae control IMO.

Sam

Amano Shrimp are now my new heroes! I picked 3 up on Nov 9th and I just noticed yesterday that all the algae in the tank is gone! That nasty whipsy green stuff is all gone. Yay.

Great little critters ain't they!

BTW make sure the tank is covered (I think from your piccies it is) and that there are no holes or gaps I suggest taping up the holes for wiring cables etc.

Shrimp that I keep are amazing escapologists - and yes my tank is covered yet still they got out until I taped the holes up.

Just thought I'd mention this before they get out and die (like a few of mine did before I knew wha to do  )

Nothing practical to say except that I like how it's looking.
I had some thoughts on names though. There's two routes you could go down in my opinion.
Number one: ostentatious names. Tristan. Jaques. Charles. Tarquin, Etc.
Number two: Down to earth names. Dennis. Norm'. Dan. Jim, Etc.

Nonsense courtesy of Bill.

My favorite part of your tank are the stump-looking pieces of wood. Makes it look like a miniture swamp, albiet a clean one.
