Java moss pad roots?

I bought a Java moss pad that has a sort of brown layer on the bottom. I assumed they were the roots but just learned that they don't have roots! What is this? Can I just remove it? I literally placed the entire thing as is into my QT

Looks like the moss is mounted on some kind of fiber mat so it can make a carpet.

The brown appears to be dead moss. Very difficult to pull out, I would leave it and see. Mosses usually react to significant differences in water and light, and can be slow to establish.

Yeaa it does seem to look like that. Ty. I'm guessing it's safe to pull the java moss off this mat? Or I'm thinking if I should just let it grow on it until it gets bigger, then glue pieces onto whatever I want.

I think the others got it but there definitely might be some dead moss in there as well haha
