My gold crowntail got hurt. He has been in the same tank, a Hex 5 Eclipse from Marineland, almost since I got him last September. He is a good boy. He flares and spreads his tail and builds bubble nests. He has a good dispsition and comes over to say hi!

Saturday afternoon I found him laying on the bottom looking at me with hurt eyes. When I checked him, he had bloody tail fins and blood around one gill or side of his face. I changed his water right away and added extra Atison's Spa (IAL). I will put in a new filter media in the morning. Tonight he is up and around but still hurt and blooded. I can see a big chunk is out of his tail all the way to the base.

I just turned his heater back on. He has never got sucked into the intake even though he wraps his tail around everything, including the intake and the heater. The Eclipse really doesn't have that strong a filter suction.

I am not sure what hurt him. Since there appears to be a hurt place on his face, too, he couldn't have been chewing himself on his cheek, and I have never seen him do that.

Mainly I want to know if I should put PimaFix (diluted of course) in with the IAL? Atison's says not to add salt to the Spa preparation. I wondered if I should add PimaFix to the Spa.

I just want to help him heal. I hope he's not chewing himself. I also have another IAL extract preparation from BetterBetta, but the Atison's also has Aloe and vitamins. It says 5 mil to a litre. How much is that to 5 usg?

5 galls is about 20 litres. Hope he gets better soon.

I can tell you, it definitely was the intake. And he probably did it on purpose, unwittingly.

My boy used to wrap his tail around everything, including the very low-flow intake and it never bothered him. He likes to 'stick' himself to things....

Then one morning, he is missing half his tail which is torn and bloody, and his dorsal. Apparently, he stuck himself to it on purpose, and let it suck his fins INSIDE and sat like that for god knows how many hours. The only reason I know is after I medicated his tank and unplugged his filter for a few days, I caught him at it again, getting tattered. So I had to put him in a tank without a filter as he obviously has a very dangerous habit :*)

I treated mine with bettafix and salt and aquarisol for two months, and his tail is nearly back except his butterfly pattern is not as nice anymore. But he swims better as it is shorter for now, lol.
I'd just turn off the filter for now, or cover it with a sponge...

You could change the filter to a sponge filter or a corner box filter. I have box filters in 2 of my betta tanks and they're very good. They hold a lot of filter media and keep the tanks spotless. As they are powered by an air pump the flow is very gentle.

I will turn the filter off when I am not present for now, then I have a split 2.5 with a whisper air pump powered filter and a split 3 with an undergravel filter. I will move him to one of those, perhaps with his sister on the other half. I still don't know about mixing Atison's Spa with MelaFix. I need ral, cracker, wuv or Synirr--someone familiar with IAL and Atison's.

Okay, well, you CAN use it melafix with attisons, because attisons does not have melaleuca or tea tree oil, which is what melafix is. I am sorry you don't trust my advice:)) IAL is a tannin extract, nothing whatsoever to do with melaleuca, which is a natural antimicrobial.

BTW I have been breeding fish, herps and others for a long long time:)) It's okay, I don't trust everyone either :hyper:

I'm sorry I offended you, fawnmodel. I missed your response to mixing Atison's with Mela/PimaFix. Atison's does say specifically not to add salt with it. I suppose because it has sodium chloride as an ingredient already.

Nevertheless, I have just added a few drops of Mela/PimaFix.

I also question whether the filter intake could have done this amount of damage, because I have seen him and Samson (a DT/HM) with their tails wrapped around the filters, and they were not sucked in at all. I just put my finger up to the intake and whatever suction there is is imperceptable. Nevertheless, I have turned the filter off just in case.

I also do not understand using Aquarisol (an ich medication) to heal fin damage. Are you using it as an anti-bacterial? or as a preventative, just in case.

The reason I addressed wuv is because I know she uses Atison's Spa at times. Since she does, I assume Synirr does. ral and Cracker what'shisname understand Thai methods of healing so I wanted their input.

Finally, I am a multicouncel seeker. The Bible advises that there is wisdom in many councelors .

So again, I am sorry I offended you. It certainly was not my intent.

Oops again. Sorry again. I didn't see the smiles. :) I am at the end of my 15+ hour day and past my beddy bye time. I don't process as well.
