Well, as the title says, I thought I'd jump over to the tropical section to have a nose as I ain't been over there for a while and I came across one particular topic from a newbie on here that had just been given a 6th tank and wasn't entirely sure wether to go tropical or marine.
Obviously being in the tropical section they were all trying to convince him to go planted or a nice community setup.
He did say he would like to venture into the salty side but heard that it was very hard to do and didn't like the thought of a 6 week cycle!..............

So I put him straight and gave him an idea and basically tried to LURE him over to here just to give him a taste.

I bet the experienced freshies on there are slating me at the mo for it! Lol

I'll come over here and slate you personally, you, you....salty :p

you will need:
ro water
salt
refractometer
powerhead
liverock
could do with a skimmer.

it will be expensve but worth it

What are the circulation pumps? They could be used as powerheads? maybe....

It can be a little more costly than fresh but I have a new 6foot setup and am mainly buying second hand bits. Saves a little money. Not been too much so far but all depends on what you consider too expensive tbh!

With the RO water, it would be more benficial to get your own ro unit. I asked how much to fill my tank initially would be from the LFS and it was ear £70 if not more, considering you can get 2nd hand units for less it is worth getting!

If I remember rightly woody it was you who suggested to me to go salty

Don't blame me! Lol

Are you saying your regretting it now or are you glad I did suggest it to ya! Lol

lol, I'm just kidding; it's great that there's people here willing to help him go salty if that's what he wants to do :)

I guess I'm just one of those strange people that don't understand the attraction of marines!

Hi mate, yes I believe it was you! So can i assume that you've started looking into equipment to get an idea on cost and now your having second thoughts?
Well like suggested it's is best to buy 2nd hand as you'll save loads and their are plenty of bargains out there.
Before you start scaring your self with the prices of skimmers etc you need to ask yourself what type of system you would want and how prepared/committed you are to perform regular maintenance on the tank.

Ie by performing good weekly water changes and by keeping the bioload low (less fish/less feeding) you could probably get away with running skimmerless.
There are 3 types of marine system and they all have different requirements equipment wise.
You have fish only (FO), fish only with live rock (FOWLR) or reef (variety of coral/s).

Filtration wise you don't need a filter as the live rock will take care of your biological filtration and will also cycle your tank for you on startup so no need to add fish or dose with ammonia.
A protein skimmer provides mechanical filtration ie collects debris/waste out the water but good weekly water changes will help you get around this.
Lastly you have chemical filtration ie phosphate remover/activated carbon etc ( you could add these in an internal or external filter or just house them in media bags in an area of high flow.

I feel a bit guilty now dragging you over here but I just don't like to see people jump in at the deep end when deciding what type of aquatic system is best for them without considering all the options first.

I wish you luck though mate in whatever you decide and you can be assured that no matter what you decide to go for the members here on TFF will guide you every step of the way!

Especially us salties! Lol

Lol! I wasn't attracted to them either at first until I was lumbered with a marine tank and now I'm addicted to it.

But I still have love for the fresh side tho! Lol

okay .. well i am not worried about live rock or corals..
its the pretty fish i want..
i don't mind changing some water once a week..

so what does that leave me with..
i just need ideas on prices and would love to go the marine route... but not got loads to spend out at the mo..

right okay what extra i would need.. trying to work out cost so i know before i fully choose which way i go...
happy to have just fish and use plastic plants? or is that a no no?
and got some ornaments for the tank..

refractometer.. ebay.. about 15-20£
RO water machine. about 80£

how many kg's of live rock would i need in a 6 foot tank?

skimmer... approx 40£
salt 30-40£
