Sorry I've been gone so long, it is summer and I have been out of town. I left my betta babies in the 'watchful' eye of my mother, expecting the worst. But what other choice did I have? And I came home to a dead merlin, and the nastiest looking 30 gallon tank one could IMAGINE! Long story short, I spent upwards of an hour cleaning what looked like a horrible outbreak of some sort of slimy algae all over the glass, filter, caves, plants, anything and everything. NASTY! Sky is going downhil fast, he caught whatever mysterious disease Merlin had; the fading color, scraggly scales, ratty, rotting fins, laying at the bottom as if dead, and then perking up at feed time to swim around like normal fr a while, I am just baffled. If anyone thinks they might know what this is and how to treat it, PLEASE HELP ME! The other fish in that divided tank is already showing sings of the mystery killer, or I'd quarantine him.

Hey Orky, welcome back. :)

Aaaw :rip: Merlin. Maybe it was columnaris? Were his scales slimy-looking? I hope Sky pulls through....

Hmm, I don't think it was columnaris. I lost Orchid to Columnaris, and it pretty much came and killed in 24 hours. Merlin was sick for a good couple of weeks. he didn't really look slimy, just scraggly. I am completely baffled. The tattered fins that WOULD NOT heal, missing rays, no reaction to maracyn, the random bouts of lethargy, I'm out of ideas. So far, sky isn't any better or worse.

sry to hear about "the mystery killer" one of my oscars got something like that. i was sooooo soooo sad. had him for almost 2 years

I am honestly at my wits end. If I knew what it was, I woud be SO much better off. Grr! Well, for now I am just done trying to treat them, due to lack of time, money and patience. I am just going to give them clean water and let nature do what it wants.
