can we not agree to report spammers intead of bloody replying and get this show on the road>?

see spammer.. 1 reply> REPORTED end of :)

no simonas its at least 3/4/5 mins before you can reply in some cases ( all of mine) u send one then cant send another till the time limit is up
used to be instant, but i like to talk to members and will do so, but for god dake if they think im being arogant :(

some pms demand urgent attention, but given the delay.. phhrr, cant advise really

The problem is that they register as a member, and run a bot through our pm system. We average about 300 pm's daily, in one day just shy of 10,000 were sent before the delay was put into use. That's 10,000 members getting porn in their pm, disguised as an actual pm. Often they are not active members, get an e-mail notification, and then check the pm they got, not cool.

Don't expect the delay to end anytime soon, we all have to deal with it, me included.

is there no way to impliment a minimum post count before you can send IM's? Or maybe the mods/admin could verify trusted members to send as many PM's as they want? Thus leaving the unverified ones with the time limit between PM's?

fair enuff :)
can take on board the comments and of course agree with the reasoning
dosent make it less of a pain in the rear end tho :)

i suggest members swap msn/windows live/hotmail IDS- just update ur profile its there to be used :)

:( 10 minutes until i can reply to a message . But i guess it's all good as it's keeping the younger ones safe on the site

is their not a captcha we can add to PM. as i get loads of P'm lately and having to wait 5-10 mins in very annoying

Not for each pm. It's there for registering as a member here, but once a human registers & sets the bot running it pm's at an incredible rate.

IP Board is due for their release of an upgrade, it's just past Beta and into the Release Candidate stage, so a fully supported version can be expected shortly. I would imagine a sort of Captcha function will be integrated into the pm system, as this was a major problem recently for many forums.

Failing that, did you get far with looking into my checking of PM's for links surgestion to an earlier similar thread?

All the best
Rabbut

We tried the minium post count to no avail. It took a spammer about 3 minutes to post "aaaaaa" 10 times (20 second between posts) and get access to the PM system. I'm not sure about the technical side on Admin being able to "approve" current members though. We know it's a pain (although I send very few PMs so I never really noticed it) and it's a shame we have to do something like that to the good members just because of a few kooks.

Could we not do something like change the limit from whatever it is now, so a person that sends say, 20 PMs in 15 minutes has a time limit...?

would changing the minimum post count to something like 50 not work? I appreciate they are alot of legit posters below that, but it would'nt take long for a member here to get to that many posts, It would encourage them to get involved. But would increase the amount of time a spammer has to post their rubbish, giving the mods/admin more time to notice and ban the offender?

maybe?

Still not really. As rdd said, all it takes is 50 'nice photo' posts in the photo forum (i.e, exactly the same rubbish that most people post) and it's hello spam. Whatever is done, somebody will complain, but until the forum software allows for a better solution this is likely the best way.
