Hi,

There is a round spot on my platy (see pics below). Could this be the sign of a pregnant one? The belly doesn't look too large to me. Anyway, if it is indeed pregnant, how long before it will give birth and how many? I already put it in a breeder trap but it doesn't seem to be happy. Should I do something about it?

TIA.

Nikki

sje definitely looks pregnant, but i can't give an estimate for time. they are ususally pregnant for about 4 weeks, but stress can increase that time...
the breeding trap will definitely increase her stress level. what are the other fish in the tank. my platy gave birth in the tank with a molly and 4 danios and although i don't think all the fry made it i still have 8-10 fry in the tank...just have lots of hiding spots - small rocks, java moss ot other smally leafy plants work well!! hope this helps!!

she deffinotly preg, but I would say from the pic she not ready to birth yet, it could even be another couple of weeks.

Please remove her from the trap. there nasty killing boxes.

That sounds good. I will let her out for a few weeks before I put her back in. I have some hiding places but probably not dense enough to protect the fry.

Thx for the advice

I would just leave her with the others and keep an eye out for fry each day the first time through. Once you see them you know she will be due again in about a month give or take a few days and you can be prepared time wise for the second batch. I recommend a cheap 2.5gal tank that can be purchased from Wal-Mart cheaply (abt $30) instead of a breeder trap, it is much less stressful for the mother. Get the one with the undergravel filter and not the one comes with the power filter. Fry and power filters don't mix.

Just an update to my platy. Today I saw one small fry (2 to 3mm long) swimming :D
However, I haven't gotten to chance to look more closely for others. Based on the size, could it be born for a while now or a new born? How many fry would a platy give give to at a time? Should I try to catch it with a net and raise separately?

Overall I am very please. I hope to see more more of these little guys soon!

Nikki
