I have 2 male bettas with their tanks side by side. I have a question about that weird fleshy thing coming out from their chin...after there done staring at each other it goes back in...And I know some of you may say that im a begginer and should know this...But im just getting a second Opinion on the matter. So yeah...

Is the "fleshy growth" anything like this picture? If so, it is just a skin flap under the chin that protrudes when flaring.

Ok good. Quite perfectly normal; your boys are just being cranky, agressive betta men. :)

I've found envolops work quite nice....

Mine tend to blow their tails as well. Basically, they are just darting around to erratically to support those big, heavy tails, so they shred. Some bettas also fin-bite when stressed or excited, which is another reason I don't let my males veiw one another (I have a fin mutilator).

I don't know for sure, because none of my boys have blown a tail fin. But I suspect the boys are talking about the tail fin being flared so wide so much that it rips in two. That it seems to me would be a delta tail. I don't think my double tail, CT, or VT would be able to flare the tail that tight.

Like I said, I'm just reading between the lines from some posts. :/

But they are talking about the tail fin not the gill flap that you were asking about, arrowhead.

By the way, no question asked in order to be informed is stupid! Please ask, and ignore rude answers. :X

The picture that RandomWiktor put up was way diffrent from when my Guys flare...The fins again arent that tight...The gill flap is the only thing I notice thats diffrent when they flare. :)

It's usually either the back fin or the bottom fin, not sure of the proper names though :*)
