Is This Jaguar Cat Worth The Risk?

ive been looking for another jag cat ever since i sold my last 2 as they are stunning fish even though hardly ever seen.... i really regret letting my 2 go

any way i found one that had been taken to a shop by a customer its for sale at £15 which is very cheap for a 5 inch jag. the thing is ats a bit tatty and not looking great but it could be due to stress as it hasnt a cave to hide in. it also has white spots the length of the lateral line which ive never seen before....

is it worth the risk or not?
does any one know why it has these spots?

Do you have a QT tank for it? Just thinking neither of your tanks are worth risking should it go wrong.

Those white spots look funny though - are you sure they are white spots? Could they be spines sticking out?

Just had a quick google and there is a post on a forum that talks about it hope that could help you given the specialist nature. Or just wondering could it be a false jaguar? This pic on Seriously Fish looks a bit like it with the white spots on the lateral line http/www.seriouslyfish.com/species/liosomadoras-morrowi/ the pics on Planet Catfish are not a million miles either. I dont know how to tell the difference between the two though?

Dont know about those weird spots but if you have a hospital tank its deinatly worth the risk. im gonna be looking for some in a few weeks time and for £15 it would definatly be worth the risk

Wills I've just been looking on the net and I think it is a false Jaguar catfish. Maybe even a cross breed as it does have some patterning.....
Not the real deal so its not for me.
Lloyd be carefull if looking for more than 1 of these as they will fight each other and are very territorial. Expensive fish to lose one....

I'm not sure if he is still active on here, but "nelly" is advertising his Jaguar Catfish in the Dorset section of AC (along with a lot of his other fish). Probably out of the question given the distance and I'm not sure what either of you think about courier posting, but thought I'd mention it.

Definitely looks like a Liosomadoras morrowi (false jaguar) to me and considering its £15 i would say it is. I think some can be more patterned than others and that they tend to loose it as they get older.

i wouldnt be too off put by th eprice as the shop its at had it taken in to them and dont know what it is......

im not 100% but im going with false although it does have quite a bit of patterning under that dark colour for a false....

It looks more like the true Jaguar to me - the false doesn't have any of the patterning that the true one does, except maybe dark spots. I would say it is a fish with unusually subtle patterning, but definitely Liosomadoras oncinus, not Liosomadoras morrowi. for £15, I'd snap it up.

Martin this was my first thought but wasnt sure about the white dots along its lateral line. none of my previous oncinus have had these that were obvious anyway and the pics on the net show them clearly on the morrowi which made me think it could be the false jag or maybe a cross breed.... the cat also didnt have anywhere to hide so it was looking pretty stressed out too which wouldnt help the colouration either.... i think if im going for another jag it has to be a good looking one as i dont want one just to say ive got one again and when i did see it i would be a bit dissapointed

The morrowi have these white spots, and am sure (see this image) the oncinus have them too.
Although it's not a show quality fish, I reckon with some feeding up, and plenty of places to hide, this will turn into a much nicer fish than it currently looks.
I'd definitely say no to it being a hybrid - there have been only a handful of reported cases of these breeding, and I'm absolutely convinced this is a true species. Even if it does turn out to be morrowi (which personally I doubt), it's still got potential IMO.

i think you should take him. if all it takes is some people here to say they think it is a jag and you'll buy it then you may as well just get it. its actually "brand" if you like isnt a massive factor because you cant really tell the difference anyway so why not just go for it.

plus if your gonna get one would you not feel better to rescue this ragidy one

im leaning towards it being a true jag but im not just gonna buy it for the sake of it.... also the difference between true and false is unbelievably noticable when coloured up. google them to see the difference.
