is this a good lfs policy

While this is a good argument you still have to be licensed to drive a car, which means you had to pass some sort of test or class or some sort of training. In the case of fish people need to take it upon themselves to learn fish before they get into the hobby.
we could introduce a Fish Licence!

and what exactly would someone have to do to get a "Fish License"? What would it involve? Knowing evrything about cycling/keeping fish/ water levels/ community fish/ basically EVERYTHING you get to know after keeping fish for 6 months? I think its a really bad idea - when I got my tank I didnt know anything about fish - just the basics of what fish can go together, etc. So, I bought my tank and after two weeks filled it up with fish slowly. I have now had it since december and Ive lost about 6 fish in all that time.

Who decides which questions go in that test? and why does someone who has kept fish for a long time autmatically going to have more luck at keeping them than someone with a new tank? most lfs will be happy to advise.

as for age restrictions, its a great idea.

Well, the lps I worked at didn't allow any rodents or reptiles or birds bought without parent permission. But there wasn't a rule on fish. I wanted to get a hamster and I couldn't and I worked there!
That's pretty dumb, obviously you know how to look after the animals if you work there doing what? Looking after Their livestock lmao what a bunch of knobs, we won't let you take one home, but hey! We'll let you loose on all the animals in the shop pmsl

WRS just wondering how old are you??

im 18, yet i couldnt get anyfish because i dont take my drivers liscence w/me were i ever i go. my mom drove me there. the thing though that really got me mad was that my mom was in there. she stepped out and the frecking weasel SAW her, and she said, u can get the fish now right in front of him.

and there are already fish licences, for fishing.
there should be no test or licence needed 2 have ANY kind of pet at all. if there was 1 needed, id say dog, not fish.

In England, you aren't allowed to buy ANY animals from my lps, ie Pets Ata Home. Period. No animals unless you have your parent, obviously. But this is a really good policy. It means that you can't buy fish just to waste them. And although the staff don't sit down with you and go into great detail, each time I asked for advice they asked me how long had my tank been set up, which model of tank I have, how many and what fish I have already, about my water changes etc.

With regard to the licenses, how would this experience, say what you know after 6 months, if a person is like me and is learning on the job how would they achieve the license purely by reading books? Imho, reading books to gain experience is by no stretch of the imagination a comparison to buying and setting up your own tank and learning through your own mistakes what works and what doesn't. Sure you can ask other people, but people don't know how to do things until they can try it themselves.

I can understand having to obtain a license for some of the rarer animals or harder to look after ones, as in Oz you need a license for the vast majority of native animals - but as for on most fish, I think it's ridiculous....unless they were not really a beginner's fish maybe or on account of them being rare. I personally think that the prices of wildlife licenses here in Oz is nothing short of highway robbery though, and the damn things are only valid for a year!

Is a good and a bad idea, but they would never in force that everywhere

Clutters, I had the same problem with the 'arresting people for illegal purchase of neon tetras' earlier on. Getting your point across is pretty tricky!

Are you being sarcastic?

clutters (I hopes you don't mind me calling you that), didn't your 'location' thing say 'but I'm originally from Scotland' or something before? What's happened, have you renounced your heritage?

I was in petco several weeks ago and these kids, probably 15, asked the cashier if you had to be 18 to buy fish. She said no. Well, they left with 2 bettas and a small critter keeper. In the checkout line they were betting whose would win.

I can understand an independent lfs instating this policy.
Totally agree. I've seen that more than a few times

And this is why I don't want to work at a petstore. you have to sell people the animal even if you know they won't be going to good homes despite your efforts to educate them. And if you refuse then people scream at you until they get their way. Bunch of babies, that's what I say. If you don't like the rule shop somewhere else because there isn't anything you can do about it.
