Is There A Link Between Damsel Fish And Cichlids?

The reason why i ask is because they are so similar in so many ways...I love both sets of species.

I know that they are both types of Perciforms...but i mean deeper than that...after keeping both tons of cichlids and alot of the Damsel group over the years...no other fish compare to me, it seems to me like Fish like New World and Old waorld cichldis both came fro ma common ocean based ancestor...probably something from the damsel group?

Or maybe even the Damsels and Cichlids both evolved separately from another fish?

Or is it all coincidence?

yep single celled organisms. it just depends on which traits the species inherits as to how it behaves.

Some central american cichlids , like black bars have often been found out on the reef..look at the californian garibaldi and it's a cichlid looking at you...obviously these fish share an common ancestor...also marine angels carry numerous cichlid characteristics
