ok well today i brough some new plants for my tank and red set everything up. the shrimp seemed a little scared as its hiding log had moved. any way i left my tank and everything seemed ok. gave the fish a feed and the shrimp did its usual thing but rather than being hidden he done it in full veiw.

well i came upstairs to check on my tank and my shrimp was on its back. a bit upset i got my net and went to fish him out. but he started to move. he curled himself up a little more and his legs twitched. i thought he might be in shock or something so tried moving him back to his feet but he just rolled over again. i moved him to under his log and left him to see if he would die or be ok and he is still the same. i went to fish him out again and he start moving once again. just his legs twitching and tail curling up and then uncurling.

i think he is slowly dying but unsure. what do you all think?

by the way he is just a normal filter shrimp.

how long do shrimps usually last? i think this one has been scared to death with the shock of everything moving, had him around 2 months now.

would it be better to buy a couple of shrimps next time as i do want to replace him.

whats the best thing to do. leave him to die or flush him now?

The kindest to kill anything fish related is to place him in a container with a bit of tank water, then add a few ice cubes. This will slowly reduce the temperature of the water, and the shrimp will just fade away. Please dont flush!!! its very cruel :/

Yes I would suggest getting a few, they always do better with company of their own kind. B)

yeah didnt want to flush it, is so horrible.

i think i will pay the pet shop a visit tomorrow and get a couple of shrimps :D

thanks for all the help and advice people :D

never heard of killing a fish of like that so its peaceful, will keep it in mind if i have any other problems where the fish is slowly dying.

ok i left the shrimp in the tank over night to see if he was alive or not and when i woke up he was all stood up and moving about and cleaning. then i turned the light off and went and got ready for work. came back and he was on his back again.......... is he playing dead or is he dying? i dont wanna kill him off but dont wanna leave him in pain :(

Shrimp are very delicate little creatures, thats unless you have monsters like mine..ROFL.. Meet Boris

I would be very wary of adding any treatments to the water as they really do struggle with them. The only thing I would use as a last resort is Primafix..big brother to Melafix. Its made from all natural ingredients and so far Ive had no problems with any of the fish I keep using this. Its excellent for anything fungus and bacterial related and heals fins like nothing ive seen before. Also works great with Sluggish apple anails, pardon the pun!! :hey:
If you want to try something try that, but I wouldnt risk anything else as crustations in general cant handle copper and its found in most treatments these days.
I would just leave him and see how he goes, he may die, he may pull through. But dont buy any new ones until hes past on, and then I would give it a few weeks and a few water changes before adding anything. Wouldnt want to risk pasing anything on the your new little darlings :)

You mentioned that you bought some new plants. Did you wash the plants thoroughly before putting them in your tank? Sometimes aquarium plants are treated for snails. Shrimps are extremely sensitive to these treatment and it's like poison to them. You can try water change to see if it helps. Good luck and hope you shrimp gets better.

Another suggestion could be liquid plant fertilizer, they contain copper. Some shrimp suposedly does fine with a small amount (I personally have opted not to use fertz after purchasing my shrimp), but if there was a buil-up of this maybe it is having a reaction to this?

What type of shrimp is it?

It could be that it needs to shed but is having problems...

Do a search to check details, but if this is the case an iodine treatment might help ;)

well he is dead and brought a couple more today.

im not sure what killed him. i dont use plant fertaliser. it could of been snail treatment. did wash the plants but could of probably washed them better.

just need to look after the two i brought today. cant remember the name of them but will try and find out and people could give me tips. these two seem alot more active than my last one.

Sorry to hear that you lost your shrimp :( and Good Luck with your new ones :D What do you feed your shrimps BTW? Might be a good idea to supplement their diet with something rich in calcium to strenthen their shells.

The lifespan of shrimp keept in a fish tank are usually below 24 months, the condition of your shrimp sounds bad, good luck!
