Hey there I need you pick your brains.
I'm new to keeping fish and so on but I think both my guppy females are pregnant, not sure.
If it turns out they're pregnant what should I do nets are stressful for it I read.
Is insest in the fish world too, might be a silly question but if a brother and sister had fry would they be weakers, or possibly have problems or does it not matter?
I'd like to keep the fry and not let them get eaten by the other fish in the tank.
The others in the tanks are angel fish, platys, guppys and a baby golden ancestor.

Here is a picture.
Thank you for all advice given guys!

Is the best picture I could get, can try and get better if you guys need it.
I heard that black bit might mean it's pregnant.

I'll attach the pic too.

She's most definitely pregnant. The black spot and the engorged belly are tell-tale characteristics. Get ready to be a parent!

Unless you have a separate cycled tank, I wouldn't suggest moving the female. What you could try to do would be to get a smaller aquarium (AQ2) that is approximately 10-20 litres and fill it with water from the current aquarium (AQ1). Use some of AQ1's filter medium.

Put the female into AQ2 when you think she's about to give birth. Instead of a net, use a cleaned jam jar and slowly scoop her up. As soon as she has given birth to the last fry, remove her from AQ2 and put her back into AQ1. Feed her ASAP, as she'll be very hungry and may gobble up some of her babies if she's given the chance!

As for the incest, I wouldn't worry. It's a very common occurrence in the guppy world. Provided you're not turning them into breeding stock, they'll be fine.

Provide the fry with plenty of floating plants (plastic is fine), dark gravel and a dark background and they'll do just fine! Some overturned ceramic pots would be great as well although do take care that they're fish-safe. Make sure you get some special food tailored for the little fellows!

You'll probably have the pleasure of introducing new members every few weeks, so I'd suggest you keep AQ2 permanently running for all its new little inhabitants!

All the best and good luck! :good:

Thank you very much for the reply and the conformation! :):)

I don't currently have a second aquarium to put them in and nor the money :(
In the current tank there is a fair few plants and can always buy a few more.
If I did get hold of another tank some how(a family member might have one), I wouldn't have a heater nor a pump/filter for that tank so would be tricky.

I'll buy some dark coloured gravel ASAP, I don't like the current light blue colour ATM as it is.

Both my females are pregnant then, I just bought them from the local fish shop about 3days ago, lol.
The more I read it's common to get pregnant ones from there, interesting.

One more question, how long does it look like she has left before she lets them go? Would be good to get an estimate or how could I tell she's about to blow so I can prepare stuff for when it's about to happen:)

Once again thank you very much
must go out and buy the nappies and milk now :p
