I was looking to get a new tank but other things have cropped up and used the saving i was meant to be using for the new tank

I'm wanting to keep chichilds would this be possible in the 190l ?

What species would be best kept together had a look at some of the dwarf species and i like those best

Do these have to be kept in pairs or groups ? thinkfish didn't give much info on that lol And how many full grown could i fit in the tank ?

And when it comes to set up i'm wanting to go for a natural set up built up rocks/pebbles for hiding spaces etc do i have to use live plants ? Or would silk/fake ones do just as good

I will be upgrading to a 340L at some point once funds become available again lol

Any advice is greatly appreciated

:D

Hi kizz, yes there are quite a few options

slightly territorial species: Angels, bolivian Rams, blue rams, keyholes, apistos, kribs
These can be kept in pairs with smaller community species

more aggresive species, Festivum, blue acara, Firemouth, Convict, Sajica, Rainbow cichlid
These are best kept singularly and IMO you could fit 3 in that tank

an african tanginikan setup is also an option

thanks for replies :D

I'm looking to have a cichild only set up Don't get me wrong i love my community set up at the mo but i love the cichild idea more ! lol

I'm unsure on whether it's old or new i want to go for i've seen this fish pop up again and again when i've been doing searches for them could anyone give me an ID on it and tell me what species would be best kept with it

Cheers :D

been away having a look at species

I'm still unsure on whether these are new/old world cichlids . Can you tell me if any of them are suitable with each others and how many of each kind i can keep that are compatible

Balloon Ram
Checkerboard Cichlid
Flag Cichlid
Rainbow Cichlid
Jewel Cichlid
Gold Severum

And if anyone knows what that is up there ^^^ is that compatible with anything on the list ? Really wanna know my stuff before i do this but just can't seem to find the info :D

Many thanks :D

The fish in the above pic is a long-finned German Blue Ram, a new world cichlid.

I'm no expert, but I think that any of the first four on your list would be okay together. The Jewel Cichlids IMO would be too aggressive and Severums get quite large severely limiting your other stock. What about Kribensis or apistogramma?

Balloon Ram
Checkerboard Cichlid - these would be fine with a pair of blue rams
Flag Cichlid
Rainbow Cichlid
Jewel Cichlid
Gold Severum

Balloon Ram - this is a deformed version of the one in your image, wouldn't personally choose these,
The image shows a long-finned version which seem to be very hard to come by, the species is known as the german bue ram (new world/american)
Checkerboard Cichlid - peaceful dwarf cichlid, keep in a pair or trio (new world/american)
Flag Cichlid - peaceful dwarf cichlid, keep in a pair (new world/american)
Rainbow Cichlid - a single rainbow would be ok, they are slightly larger but quite a timid cichlid (new world/american)
Jewel Cichlid - too aggressive (african)
Gold Severum -too big (new world/american)

Thanks so much for the informative replies :D

So if i went for stocking of

3 Checkerboard Cichlid
2 Flag Cichlid
1 Rainbow Cichlid

And Perhaps 2 Kribensis & 3 Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid

Would i be over stocked ?

I'm planning on going for the natural look in the tank plenty of built up rocks and fake plants . Or will i need some live ones ?

Thanks again :D

I would go with

2 Checkerboard Cichlid
2 Flag Cichlid
1 Rainbow Cichlid
2 Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid
and possibly a bristlense or bulldog pleco
and a shoal of dithers such as pristella tetras or columbian tetras.

As all of the above are species native to america I feel it would be nice to go for a sand or fine substrate with various pieces of bogwood and rocks, which would give you a nice South American biotype

I already have a plec . Not to sure if it's a sailfin or a BN would it be suitable even if it was a Sailfin ?

I would love to get sand and have read on how to clean it etc but one thing that really stumps me ...How do you wash sand ? lol

When it comes to the dithers is there any other kind of tetra's i could get other than the 2 mentioned above ?

Again many thanks for answers ...Hopefully won't have to many questions left :D lol

well Sailfins get to around 2 foot in length so will need something like a 500Litre + tank eventually

washing sand isn't too hard, I just add some to a bucket and just run water into the bucket and leave the murky water to run out over the sides, once that bits clear add it to the tank and repeat until its all done. if there is carbon in your filter this will clear any murkiness left over
As for Dithers, any medium sized tetra would be fine (just nothing too small such as neons as there is a chance these will become food)
you could even go for smaller barbs, danios or even something like platys if you wanted to,

i think davos stocking is spot on, unlike most cichlids the dwarf species seem to love planted tanks

Well i will be upgading to a 340 some point in the next 6 months so hopefully he won't grow that fast that quickly ! lol If he does outgrow the tank bf has a 475 that i'll smuggle him into :D lol

And More questions :D

on the dither side of things i like the following
Blue Tetra
Emperor Tetra
Cherry Barb

Would any of them be suitable with the cichlids ? Could i have one largish shoal of 1 type or 2 smaller shoal with 2 types ?

So with the sand query solved lol plant wise i'm going to go half live half fake/silk When it comes to live plants i have no idea on the names ! lol I would like bushyish ones near the back with perhaps some sort of short grass near the front i have some spiral? Fake and live plants in tank at the mo so going to keep them i also have some sort of fern i think (My wags love to munch on it)

Do i need to have Numerous pieces of bog wood ? Or would one suffice ? I seen a gorgeous piece at my lfs that had a plant growing it in

And wheres the best place to get rocks/pebbles that are aquarium safe Without paying through the roof at the lfs lol I was planning on going down my local stream and collecting them from there and testing with the vinegar but it's getting a tad cold out :D lol

Thanks to whomever can answer all of that ! :D
