With the cucumber....cut it length ways about an inch long and stick an ordinary dinner knife through it, close to the peel, plec will find it and eat all the nice whitey green bit. I take 6 dead cuke-rinds out of my tank every morning.
Drop the cucumber in near the front, turn off the light put on a table lamp and wait.
They are creatures of habit though....one of mine does a workout at 7:00 every morning for no apparent reason, swims circuits of the tank stuck to the glass, goes round about 10 times then goes back in to hiding, another comes out to eat twice a day, 11am and 11pm - he's a good time keeper. When he comes out the second time, he swims upside down on the water surface hoovering up anything that floats, guppies, get out of the way!
Watch when yours comes out and then check the next night about the same time, you might get a regular schedule.
