I have a ton of tropical flakes and was wondering if I could feed them to goldfish

Flake foods are generally considered to be nutritionally inferior to pelleted diets, and because they are freeze-dried, they may be linked to constipation and swim bladder troubles. While commons could probably chow down on flakes, the amount of food they consume makes pellets and fresh greens a better choice. And flakes are not reccomended for fancy goldfish, which are allready prone to swimbladder issues. In fact, freeze dried foods should be avoided when feeding fancies, and all pellets should ideally be pre-soaked so that they do not expand in the belly and pressure the swim bladder.
So, while you technically could feed tropical flakes, they are not an ideal source of nutrition, and could cause problems for fancy goldfish. If you do feed them just to get rid of them, pre-soaking would be a good idea :good:

The best thing to feed a goldfish is goldfish food. While you could feed betta pellets or tropical flakes, it should not be the long term diet, as it is not formulated for the species. Goldfish are omnivorous, but it is arguable that their diet should have a higher percentage of vegetation than meat, so something very fat and protien intensive like betta food would not be a good choice for long-term feeding. So, if you're looking for something to toss a comet for a few days until you can go buy goldfish food, that would be fine. If you want to put him/her on it long term, my personal answer would be no.
Hikari makes some wonderful pellets for goldfish, a bit pricey perhaps, but very healthy. And goldfish always appreciate boiled leafy greens, cucumber, peas, etc.

Goldfish are not that great at digesting large amounts of protein- the more protein you feed them, the more they poop. Ideally you should feed goldfish goldfish-type foods, frozen foods like frozne bloodworms are also very good.
Its fine to feed goldfish flakes as long as you also vary their diet with other foods like veg (like cooked de-shelled peas, frozen veg cubes for fish, small algae tablets etc)- a varied diet is the key to a healthy goldfish :) .
Small but regular meals are also a lot better than large but not so regular meals- feeding small but regular portions of food will help prevent constipation and allow the goldfish to get the most out of its food.
