There are numerous reasons why people use an alias on this (and other forums).... Is it moral for anyone, who happens to know the real name of that person, to address him as such in a post or topic?

For instance, we all know That Big_C is Colin and Tolak is John... but is it Ethical to "reveal" the real name of a person who you just happen to know personally??...

What are the main reasons for persons using a userid instead of his/her own name?

no i don't think so like my name is Ryan i had that in my signature and people call me Ryan and i don't have any issues with it, I am sure there are some people who are more sensitive who don't want there real name to get out,but thats ok

so personally i would said no its not like your saying there social security number out loud

I would say no, as it would be rude and disrespectful unless that person has given permission so other could use it.

Other wise our names on here would reflect our real names, no?

But I guess it is more an opinion than anything. For some it may be rude, as for others it may not. I would just stick to their "forum" name unless you know that him or her would not mind you using their real name.

As for me, I really don't mind, but then again I would say "-Trent" and not -FHM each time.

-FHM

The internet is full of nutters. It's amazing how easy it is to upset people on the internet when giving advice. Sometimes totally by accident, as the written word can be read in so many different ways.

I think it's okay to use/share a first name IF the person you are referring to does. Otherwise I stick with the user name.

Sharing a name, then spotting in a profile where abouts they live, then seeing references to their work etc all helps the nutters know a little more about you and where you are. Obviously if you are buying or selling something this might come up, but it just shows you that you should be careful who you deal with.

This might not be the view of all, but I like to keep it this way. I have had a phone conversation with a member in the past, but only because I trusted my instincts on this. I have been working in IT for 14 years and find myself to be a bit of a cautious person when it comes to the internet. Sometimes the more you know, the more concerned you get ;)

Cheers,
Squid

I don't mind if people use my forename, which happens to be Jack, many do, and I don't mind.

Actually, there proves my point a bit, I knew that (don't panic, i'm not one of the nutters i referred to, but then again they never say that are ;) ). There is a facebook group where people have joined and said what their user name is. From there you know what their full name is. Not sure that is ideal for me.

Actually, on this forum I use my real name and surname, but on all South African forums that I am a member of, I use a different userid for the very reason that you mention Squid.

In all honesty I'm not a target for most of the nutters, but as a family forum with a fair few youngsters, I think the anonymous nature of it is sometimes best.

yes that does makes sense i am a some what of a youngster but i will admit i am far more mature then some youngster and i know not to give out any thing enless its safe and as far as i go is name so call me ryan

I see no issue on first name basis, what does it matter? i mean how many Ben's is in their in the UK ? Good Luck tracking me down! Surnames are differnt as information can be gatherd from this, e.g surname - rougth location you get a phone book and wallah you narrow down the search and you have address and number.

My username's just my username because it's something unique so i can use the same username for a few things but i stick my first name at the bottom of any topics i create etc.

i dont think people should reveal names, my first name is Adam, and my surname begins with M, so i dont mind at all.

Thanks for telling me this, I will use it for evil.

Ok, Jack.

Murray?

Well, my chosen name on here "AdAndrews" is my real name, Adam Andrews, shortened slightly as many people(friends and family) call me Ad,

If those who havnt got their proper names, if they reveal their proper name on the forum, then as far as im concerned thats what you call them back, if some one posted saying

".........."

thanks
John,

then i would say, ahh, thanks John :hyper:

i sometimes use the names of people who i know the names of, like ben (always4lors) and nellys, and indigoj's, certainly not to be rude by any meens, and i didn't even think of their privacy (not in a disrespectful way, i just didn't).
after peaking to nelly a fair few times, and seeing other people use his name, i did, as i thought of it as preference, same as indigoj, i use her name sometimes, i've met her and talked to her and im sure she wouldn't take offense to me using her name! i understand that for some reason some people would prefer their name not to be mentioned, in which case they shouldn't tell anyone, in my eyes that would stop anyone using it

It might be better to stick to usernames for the sake of the other members, especially new ones, and not just the members being addressed. Some people are more shy about trying to break into a group that is already on a first name basis with each other. :D

well my user name says it all  i think first name terms is ok if people say they dont mind, some people prefer not to be known by there name, but suppose its upto that person and whatever reason they choose not to be called by it.

me tho, couldent give a monkeys im rob, Hi
