Yeah, i shall take less notice of what the lfs has to say, by now adding fresh ro water and salt will it hurt the live rock iv got in the tank, as i thought the tank needs to cycle befor being able to re-add the rock.

Adam :good:

Your rock will be absolutly fine.
As lon as the water has salt in it.
Though rememeber, your rock needs to stay wet, so dont empty the tank without the RO water to fill it with as you will get lots of die off, and your cycle will start all over again.

josh

But surely if i take the water out, the tank will have to cycle again with the new Ro water??thankyou

It isnt your water which has to cycle.

Your live rock contains bacteria which performs your biological filtration (turning toxic ammonia from fish waste ect, into nitrite, then into nitrate which can be tolerated in higher quantities).

So when people say there tank is cycling, they mean that this bacteria is reproducing to cope with the amount of ammonia.

This is why you dont add lots of fish at once because there will be too much ammonia for the bacteria to convert into nitrate, causing an ammonia spike, possibly killing your fish, so remember to take time when stocking. This is why you need a test kit.

So it isnt your water that cycles. During the cycle, or at the end, you will need to do water changes to get rid of ammonia in the water.

:hyper: Oh ok, well, im buying mature water and stuff, so it should be ok, and iv got a new skimmer which still needs to be set up. Hopefully get it done by end of week :good: does that method sound ok??????

Adam

What do you mean by mature water?
Im guessing if youre buying it then it will be RO, however, if its from your lfs then it may not be , since you said they dont use RO on their setup.

have you bought a test kit yet?

josh

No whats happening is, iv found a guy who sold me the skimmer sume boyu upgrade skimmer, fits nicely in the orca...And he`s got a 8ft marine tank, he doing a 10% water water change, 25litres and giving it to me aswell as some activated algae to put in my tank to drop the nitrates, once iv got the water shud be 2mro, sunday, i shall empty half the tank, and add the 25 litres of mature water in, be ideal as my tank is 58 litres so jsut under half of mature water. I shall purchase test kits after tuesday coming up :hyper: does this sound ok????

Adam

People dont usually suggest adding peoples water to tanks because of what it might contain. However, since you have no stock in your tank, and his tank is mature, it might do it some good. It could add benifical bacteria to your tank, assisting in the colonies developing on your rock. On the other hand, it might contain some bad bacteria (god its like a yacult advert round here  ) which might be bad for the tank.

josh

Yes true, but it cant really get any worse, and i have seen his tank, and its top notch etc....looks after it very very well, so im putting some trust, but likw you say theres no telling, but i think im going to try and run the risk!, Thanks for ur help by the way josh, been good! And also, yeh i agree, it is a yakult advert around this website haha :hyper:

There is no reason to add water from someone else's tank - you run the risk, as FF said of adding phosphates, nitrates etc and harmful parasites. The term 'mature' water is just another name for 'old' water that could contain many nasties, it may also be deficite in calcium, magnesium etc which if having corals is not a good place to start.

Do yourself a favour and add newly mixed (24 hours old) water with a good quality salt. Oh and one last thing, if there is any useful bacteria in the water it would be minimal
