CFC - That is why I said I will include these two after I stated we are susposed to limit it to aquarium fish, I guess US "Yankees" have adopted our own way of speaking after all. LOL. :D

I also like to add, I think my favorite post was the one about the tooth fairy.....

I can't think of any specifics but there are countless times I'll read a name of a fish with a color in it or "Rainbow" and the damn thing is brown.

But true Rainbow fish really bug me they are not brightly colored and they are not in rainbow order ROYGBIV.And they don't look like a half circle either. I can think of other fish that should have such a colorful name.

Well this thread didn't go quite the way I planned, but I'm glad that everyone's having fun!

The point I was making was that some common names are misleading in the way they describe the fish, like calling a moray 'freshwater' or a dragon goby an eel.

90% of the replies refer to names given to fish to describe their appearance. For example:
  • catfish- with whiskers superficially resemble cats.
  • Banjo catfish - shaped (a little) like a banjo
  • conficts - striped like a prinoner's uniform
(And Orcas are whales, as are all the other dolphin species.
Just as donkeys are members of the horse family, dolphins are members of the whale family.)

Well, the only thing I can think of is apple snails, because most of the time when you think of an apple you think red, and I for one have never seen a red apple snail... or bright green, which are the types of apples I like... :shifty:

What I'd like to know is why fish that are orangish W/black stripes often have the name clown in them, I have never seen any type of clown where their colors are orange and black. Am I missing something here?

Lionfish- Not a lion
Stonefish- not a stone
scorpionfish- not a scorpion
Butterfly fish- not a butterfly
Leopard wrasse- not a leopard
Dragon wrasse- not a dragon and doesnt look like one.
Wolf eel- Not a wolf or an eel.
I could do this all day but i'll stop here

kuhlie loaches - ain't that cool

I beg to differ, Khulie (coolie) loaches are WAY cool! :fun:

Bulldog pleco = In no way related to bulldogs

Or if you refer to them as rubbernose plecos I can assure you they don't have rubber noses, I'm not even sure if they technically have noses? :S

Also Jack Dempseys are not boxers, nor are they really named Jack.

Yoyo loach : contrary to popular belief, they do NOT spin back up to you if you throw them toward the ground.
