In The News Today...chocoholic Fish!

i used to have lots of males and female vail tail bettas mixed in the pond. and feed them half cooked brown rice and azolla.( only)..

they thrived like guppies in that pond.

btw.. who make this rules of how to keep fish? most of time by ppl who study them in glass tanks.

Anyone could work out that a diet of chocolate wafers is not the best food for a fish which would naturally eat fruit and other natural foods, you don't need to be a scientist or even an experienced keeper. Someone buying their first goldfish picks up a tub of goldfish flakes, not biscuits.

I wonder if there is a bit of journalistic licence at work here?

Most likely.

I Imagine the fish probably had a normal diet to start with, then they started feeding it stranger things, then one day it got fed a bit of kit kat and went nuts for it. So they kept feeding it kit kats and declared that it was the fish's favourite food.

At least it's being cared for properly now.

On the article I saw it mentioned that the big problem was people buying fish that grow to big, the aquarium said it doesn't have room for all the requests to rehouse fish that it receives.

And those Giant Gouramis really only have a face it's mother could love...

i dont know really....

when i bought my first gold fish i feed him earth worms and cooked sea weed. like every other goldfish keeper in local.

btw.. there is not much difference bitween flakes and biscuits unless u specialized.

if u have one u dont say this.. GG interact with you like cats..

I know which one I'd rather dunk in a cup of tea and which one I'd feed to fish.

I'm sure they would eat it. My dog eats anything he can get away with swallowing without being caught and stopped. I still wouldn't feed a dog or cat chocolate biscuits, and never would to a fish. I can't see a single argument in favour of it.

I read this article this morning and knowing chocolate is toxic to all but a handful of animals and the lack of nutrition in kit kats that it can't possibly have survived soley on kit kats, if all it was fed was kitkats I imagine it found food elsewhere as well.

its like feeding a human on nothing but rich tea biscuits... sure we'd survive for so long, but our teeth and probably hair would fall out, our nails would be brittle, our skin in poor condition and we wouldn't have the nutrients to survive long term. Also, we'd end up with other painful ailments before we eventually died painfully

They do seem to say he was fed SOLELY on kitkats (Gary is an amazing name for a fish BTW :D) but from what I've read these fish need a huge amount of food, eating things like a whole head of lettuce a day. Seems like it would cost a LOT to give him the sheer amount of food he needs with only kitkats - but I guess they have a good deal more calories than raw veggies so who knows!
