Just upgrade my 28L tank to a 90L.
It's only been running since Sunday with the same fish as my old tank: 1x Ram, 4x Algae eating shrimp, 2x Albino Cory, 8x Neons, 1x Bristlnose Pleco
I think I have lost 2 shrimps since the change. Used all the water from the old tank, and even left my old filter spnge in the new tank all day (with a good squeeze out). Added Filter treatment, Ich treatment and Declorinater (following advice from lfs). Since discovered the Ich treatment was not shrimp friendly! Although I am not sure if this is the only reason for 2 missing shrimps? The one i have seen wondering about seems very sickly, almost like its paralised :( always stuck on its side :(
I think the fish seem to be ok (touchwood), getting water tested tomorrow hopefully. Is there anything else I can do to smoothen the transition and avoid any illness/death?? :( When would be best to add any new fish?

Shrimp can be very sensitive.

Also, you dont need to worry about your water. Its the sponge inside the filter and the brown sludge thats on that filter that you need. So what you've done by squeezing the sponge out is potentially risky. All that did was get rid of the good bacteria, so now its like having to cycle your tank again. Get some readings, and i hope there was some bacteria left in the sponge so it can grow again.

The most likley shrimp killer in all that is the ich treatment.
What brand did you use? some ingredients can kill shrimp very easily.

What I meant was I squeezed out my old filter sponge into the new tank (new tank is an aqua one with a built in filter) and left it in the new water while I set it all up.

It's protozin, can't remember the brand name, ill check and let you know

The tank may be seeing a bit of ammonia. Even with the filter squeezings, I always give a new tank a week to cycle before adding any fish. Try testing your water and let us know what you find. meanwhile, many ich treatments use copper compounds in them. Unfortunately inverts are very sensitive to copper.

Ok, hopefully ill have the water test results today. Bit frustrating really, my old tank was my first so I'm fairly new to this. When it came to changing tanks I asked advice of my lfs, and said is it best to leave the fish it the old tank for a bit. But I was told there was no need to do it and that I would need to drain the tank to add the water to the new one anyway :( I think if I ever upgrade again i won't be following that advice

If you do ever upgrade again (I'm sure you will!), make sure you put all your filter media in the new filter, or run the two filters in tandem for at least six weeks.

I know its a bit addictive, was just meant to ne a little tank now I'm on 90l lol. Even tempted not to sell my old 28l tank incase I have room to set it up again lol. have still got my old filter, is it still worth running the two together even after I squeezed the filter sponge into the new water?

If the media has been kept damp, yes, there might well be some bacteria left in it. If it's dried out, then no; they will have died, I'm afraid.

Putting the old media into the new filter is an even better option, if it's still viable.

The bacteria cling quiite strongly onto the media, so just squeezing the old filter sponges out doesn't do much, IME. Doing a squeezing and subsequently a shortenedfishless cycle, like OM47 does, is a different matter as the bacterial colonies have time to multiply before they have to deal with fish.

Got my water test results, the only thing they said was a bit of a problem was slightly higher nitrates. They also said the protozin shouldn't have harmed the shrimps as they use it in all the tanks at the shop including shrimp ones and they're fine. They said the shrimps can be particularly sensitive to water changes.

My old filter was a little one the stuck inside the tank whereas the new one runs along the inside of the lid of the tank so o can't get any of the old to fit in the new one :/ lol
