I think you will find that you will need to put more than 3 tiger barbs they need to be in groups of 6 or more, 2 of them will usually pick on the weakest/smallest one and sometimes kill it (if in a group of three)

also in small groups the barbs will harass other fish in your tank they are terrors for fin nipping and if kept in larger groups they will confine their bickering among themselves and leave other fish alone.

this is not always the case sometimes you will get fish that defy their behavioural patterns….. but Barbs are aggressive and in most cases if are not kept in a group of 6 or more you will have problems.

when i upgrade ill get a few more

want a tip? tetra makes top fin products also. top fin should have a filter exactly like it for about $5 cheaper. i only buy top fin stuff now that i no that tetra makes them. also works for the filters also, the top fin brand works for tetra filters, and are about $5 cheaper again.

Answers:
Tiger barbs even though they are a smaller fish and max out size is around 3 inches, they should be kept with Semi- Agressive fish due to their nippy behavior. There is a disticnt "pecking" order with barbs, Usually keeping a school of 5-6 works beautifully. Anything less and they usually nip at other fish, any thing more and they tear each other up. Neons do best in large schools, lets say around 10 or so. Not that they cant be kept in smaller groups.. it just minimizes stress for them if they are in greater numbers "saftey in Numbers" is their theory. They also do best in very soft water with a low P.H. The tiger barbs would pose a threat to the neons, which would stress out the fish most likely causeing them to continuously do what most fish do during stress. They shed there exterior slime coating that acts like an barrier/ or immune system making them suseptible to Pre-existing parasites in your tank like ick. I think you would be constantly battling ick in this situation. Depending on the size of your tank because this determines the size of fish and number you can keep, you might want to think of differant species, like- T- barbs, buenis aries tetra, bucktooth tetras, all stay small but can handle the tiger barbs. Others would be larger species and need a min of 55 gallon tank like tinfoil barbs, balla sharks ect... good luck

Question:I would like to have something besides barbs to go with our tiger barbs in our aquarium. I didn't know they would hit other fish. I have put in different fish that pet stores suggest and the barbs kill them. It's scary to my kids so I don't want to bring anything else home until I'm sure. Any suggestions?

All barbs that I have seen so similar. Are there any that are extremely different looking from the tiger barbs?

Tiger Barbs are very agressive fish and will bully just about everything else. They are notorious fin nippers. they range from semi to moderatly agressive. you need somthing that will fight back and have an attitude, I suggest rosie barbs, checker board barbs, tinfoil barbs. Other moderatly large & agressive fish will compete in your tank. but they will be able to take the picking your tigers throw out without significant damage, also more fish will make it so its not always one on one dispersing the damage a bit. If thats not where you wanna go you can always sell them to your local store for credit and get some nice community fish.

Aggressive Aquarium Fish - Tiger Barb

While the tiger barb is usually a good community aquarium fish, it has a reputation as a fin nipper if not content. Tiger barbs have wide golden bodies with bold black tiger stripes and reddish fins and tail. They prefer to be in a school with a lot of space. Since they are prone to nipping fins, they should not be kept with angelfish or other long-finned fish.

How long till you upgrade? the barbs will end up killing each other or their tank mates soon enough.

There's also the Eheim ECCO 2236 for $95. I'd go with the Ecco if you're on a budget. It's best to get a filter that can do the job well. Might be more expensive but it's worth it. I use both Fluval and Eheim and like them both.

I love them, and if I ever transfer the gouramis to another tank i'll surely get some more, they are very active full tank fish that are fun to watch and get pirannah like at feeding time

they do get pirannah like at feeding time. I have 6 Barbs (5 tiger 1 green) at the moment but waiting for my larger tank to cycle then I will transfer them into the big tank and get more Barbs (so i have a total of 6 green and 6 tiger) (I love my Barbs they are very fun to watch) I have been researching what tank mates to get for them and I think I will go with your more agressive Gourami (Trichogaster trichopterus) such as Three Spot Gourami, Blue Gourami, Opaline Gourami, Gold Gourami LFS suggested neon tetras because they are fast moving but I think i may get some torpedio barbs they are really pretty.

I really wanted some angles but every LFS I have talked to strongly suggested that was not a good idea and when I researched articles online they also suggested it was not a good idea, plus peoples past experiences with barbs and angels in a community tank had ended in blood shed.

So I guess I am just going to get yet another tank this really does end up being an obsession.

They were questions I found on the net that other people had asked various fishkeeping websites, I found the q's and a's to be helpful in my research.

I did asked an trusted expert @ LFS about dwarf gorumies and he said that the dwarf gorumies were generally a little to placid to go in with barbs ......... i have heard of some poeple that keep dwarf gourmies successfully with barbs but they have a large number of barbs and I have also heard of people who kept these fish togehter and the barbs killed the dwarf gourmies.

Well being semi-agressive the blue paradise would be a great tank mate for the barbs They are a beautiful fish ..... they do have long fins though so id keep an eye on them with the barbs.

grimmy, I know we have discussed this before and it has already been mentioned in this thread but if you put the 3 tiger barbs in with the other fish in the list, in a couple months, you will have nothing but the tiger barbs and possibly the tetras and pleco. They will definitely kill the slow moving gouramis and angels. Tiger barbs are not community fish and are considered to be semi aggressive. I could probably link you to a dozen sites that say the same thing. Please read the comments on this site and either forget the tiger barbs or the angels and gouramis. Slow moving fish do not stand a chance against them. If you put the angels in with the barbs, you have basically given the a death sentence and it won't be quick and painless. It will be non stop harassment and they will rip the angel to shreds. I know that sounds harsh but I am just trying to get he point across that angels and tiger barbs will not work together.

Edit: Blue pardise gouramis are indeed semi aggressive and you can only have one male per tank as they will fight like bettas. They are also very territorial and will attack any fish that comes into their territory. They are also not good community fish and should only be kept with other semi aggressive fish.
