Im gonna get a hamster

never seen a hampster in a bin before but if it is light,airy and the hamster has a nice comfey bed to curl up in it should be happy.Make sure o out in lots of toys and stuff to keep it busy!

To see the bin look at my picture. And skylar, no female syrians are not the biggest. Male and female are the same in size, it depends on the fatness of them. XD Also, they are not the biggest hamsters. In the wild there is a breed of hamster the size of a BEAGLE.

I think using a large bin would be great for a hamster, it would be quiet and dark which would be good for when the hamster is sleeping. I'm babysitting a hamster right now and its a dwarf, he's in a nice size cage but I don't like the 2nd level as his feet fall through the bars so its hard for him to walk on it. I think a tall bin with different levels would be better then a cage. I also find that this hamster (I think its name is Bingo) likes to stuff tissues into his little house, its so cute. He deffentily doesn't like to be handled, he bites if you try to grab him but once you have him in your hand he won't bite. He's always trying to get away so I'm sure he doesn't apprecaite being handle. Personally, I don't really like hamsters, even after just one week I've gotten bored of him. I would rather have a type of rodent who likes to be held and petted. I heard rats can be quite interactive (but they need to be kept in groups).

I totally agree with you Meg, rats are more sociable and enjoy handling more but definitely need to be kept in groups. It also depends on the hamster, I personally like syrians and with the right handling they can become very tame. You need to know when they've had enough though.

I was referring to pet store hamsters, Dweenus. The hamster you are referring to is most likely the European Hamster (cricetus cricetus) which is far from the size of a beagle. Males range from 27-32 cm long while females range from 22-25 cm long. They are about the size of a GUINEA PIG not a 'BEAGLE' . They are also the biggest hamsters in the world but are not readily available for pets. They are mainly kept for laboratory use.

Yes, the female Syrian is larger than the male. It does not depend on weight or 'fatness' as you put it. They are larger because they carry the hamster pups.

If you want a large rodent that you can carry around - i highly suggest a rat...all the rats i've ever known have been solitary and perfectly fine. Actually better because they are bonded so much to their human. Also they are extremely intelligent and can be taught different things - like riding on your shoulder without jumping or hanging out in a backpack...provided there's enough air etc.
I think they're great - anyway...just a suggestion

Stay away from the habitrail and similar cages. They're blooming awful to clean, I wouldn't be using mine if I had space to get the bigger cage out again. To be honest I don't think cages with all the tubes do them any good at all, nor do cages with wire platforms. Handle them from early on, none of mine are tame and never will be, they are far too old now.

Well today we bought the bin and woodchips. So the thing now is if i sould buy it now and in 2 weeks take it with me to vacation and leave her in the hotel (which i prefer cause im really ansy. Or wait 3 weeks to get her. (Which i really hate doing) So yeah. Shes pretty much ready to come (cage wise).

Woodchips? You would have been much better off wit CareFresh, wood chips can, over time, really harm your hamsters breathing. You should join the Hamster House now!

he already stated that pine and cedar shavings could be bad...that is what i am assuming you mean by woodchips...

and just like with any pet, you'd be best off waiting...i don't see the point of bringing a hamster along with you....just be patient, the hamsters aren't going anywhere
