Hamsters love bins, and you need to keep a top on the bin at night as that is when the hamsters are most active. I drill holes in my toops!

so you plan on putting it in a bin so that it couldn't see anything around it and you would only be able to watch it from above?  sounds like the hamster would really enjoy that...i mean you could at least get it a mult-tier cage for $10, geez

Who why don't you ask for more details before you get hostile.
The bin is clear and totally open on top. The big hampsters are solotary so the only companionship it needs is me. I was going to buy one of those carrying cases and keep it in my small bag. But scratch that idea! Maybe if i do dicide to get one Im 50 50 now i will try not to handle it much.

ye but wwestar a bin, you would have to tip the bin on its side to get the hampster out, i really think your hamster would rather live in a hampster cage with loads of tubes he can climb threw and loads of ladders to climb up than a dark cold bin with nothing to do.

Yeah i have loads of that stuff. I have a wheel 4 bowls a little wooden tunnels tube. And i could start saving paper towel tubes (My evil gerbils loved those!). I mean i wouldn't put her in it if i knew she wouldn't like it.

It isnt a dark stinky bin, and even so hamsters are nocturnal and dislike the light.

Thats the type of bin i wanted to house her in. I mean its not like i can't afford a tank but a bin that size can go on the floor next to my desk and be much bigger than a 10 gallon which i have no room for. Oh and not to mention cheaper. Dweenus to you handle your hampsters verymuch?

yes, I handle each hamster around 20 minutes a day sometimes more. With dwarves you really have to handle them as they can go wild if you leave them alone for long periods of time! And what do you mean, you have to tip bins over to get them out? Bins are just like cages, but have WAY more pluses to them

never had a hampster u see but i do know quite alot about them, just not about what different stuff they can live in

no, it isnt lol! it isnt dark or stinky in there, its like a regular cage just its bigger and costs less! I got mine at Target. For 7.99. They are clear storage bins, and are about as tall as my knees. You can put loads of toys in it and I have ladders in mine and they are really cool! I used to buy critter trail tubes and attatch about 5 bins that size together. You can get bigger bins than those, even! Mine is a 72 quart, which is around 30 gallons I think? II have a 40 gallon bin, too!

well i knew exactly what you planned on keeping it in and wasn't trying to be hostile...more just wondering why you chose the bin...i just figured there are major circulation issues with those bins as opposed to an open cage....although i do agree that it provides a larger play area for much less money, doesn't the stench build up in it and the heat/moisture from them breathing also cause problems? i'm just curious because i plan on getting another hamster sometime soon (my last one died about 6 months ago)..

Nope. Mine dont stink at all, and none of my hamsters get respitory probems from it! Also, its INCREDIBLY eaqsy to clean. About 5 minutes...

I'm sure if you drilled a lot of holes in the bins there wouldn't be a circulation issue... I'm not a hamster keeper as of late, but was pondering the thought of owning another.

Funny thought though - does your hamster ever run into the sides because it's clear?

Not sure how much you know about hamsters but I'll list a few pointers out for you.

Syrian hamsters are solitary. Dwarf hamsters prefer groups.

Teddy-bear, black bear, panda bear, etc. are all names given to Syrians to describe their color and to get more money for them.

Cedar and Pine bedding contains phenols which can prove fatal over time.

Get a solid plastic wheel because runged and meshed wheels can harm your hamster's feet (falling through and breaking, etc.)

Don't feed too many sugary treats like the hamster-safe yogurt and choco drops you can buy. Only feed super sugary treats twice a WEEK.

Buy food with minimal sunflower seeds because they cause obesity.

Hamsters need more floorspace than height so buy a cage that is longer and wider than it is high. Keep in mind that Syrians (teddybears) can grow up to 8 inches long so pick a large cage like a Habitrail and add on some tubes.

Water needs to be provided daily in a water bottle, never a bowl.

Don't use newspaper on the bottom of the cage. It contains ink which is harmful when chewed. Use something like Carefresh or Aspen shavings. Once again, never pine or cedar.

The biggest type of hamster is the female Syrian.

DON'T carry your hamster around. They are wild animals and can easily jump and kill themselves. They have bad eyesight so they can only see inches in front of them. Hamsters need to be tamed before you can even hold them!
