At the beginning of January, I had 2 male Betta's. Drifter (After Strider; aka: Aragorn from Lord of the Rings) and Lan (A chacter in the Wheel of time series). Drifter was a beautiful red and blue boy who I bought in Feb 2013. Lan was my new boy, a mustard gas that I bought in the beginning of January.
I had them in a divided 20 gal and all was going well (Except that Drifter turned into a jumper when I introduced Lan, but that problem was quickly solved)
So around the beginning of march I began cycling the 30 gal I took down last year. I was showing my hubby the stock I was looking into getting. My hubby is not an aquarist, and I didn't bother telling him much about cycling, only that I couldn't get fish for a while. Three days later he came home with a 2 Dwarf Gourami and 8 Neon tetras. He thought he had gotten me such a nice surprise.....
So I further divided up my 20 gal because my 30 gal had very high ammonia levels at the time.
Anyways... the dwarves he bought happened to have some sort of fungal illnesses, and I began treating with pimafix.. Terrible idea. I recall reading it may not be good to use any 'fix' with anabantoids, however I never found any evidence to support the rumours. Until I made the blunder myself.
I first noticed problems when Lan's fins started melting, he always had such nice fins. Drifters was recovering from fin rot so it was harder to notice on him)
Drifter died 3 days after I stopped treatment (A 90% water change did no good, the damage was done I guess)
Lan lasted until today, a full two weeks after treatment stopped. He never really recovered from it, and began hiding a lot, and his fins never showed any signs of improvement. Today I came home to him all pine-cone and gasping. I didn't want him to suffer as I knew he had been for the past two weeks so I got out the clove oil and put him down. (I've never managed to save a fish from dying once they display dropsy, and I didn't want him to suffer any more.....)
To add to it, both Gourami died anyways... So all the work of treating the tank was just a terrible terrible disaster!!!
