Hello, I have a 2" clown plec in a 35L tank with a betta and he has developed white dots all over him, im 90% sure its not white spot as i have seen that quite a lot. Looks like dandruss but only mild, he keeps hanging around the top and lets me touch him where he would usually go mental and spash about.

Help

andrew

Whitespot looks like the fish has been sprinkled in salt.
Velvet can look like the fish has been dusted in talc.
Is he rubbing himself on things in the tank.
What are your water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

The tanks to small for him aswell. 20 to 30 gallon tank.

I do have a 25gallon tank he can go in but hes not very big atm so hes in there for the mean time, all the stats are fin (a=0, nI=0, nA=0-5). Hes not flicking (not that i have seen), i have changed the filter for more surface agitations as he was hannging around the top,

andy ideas?

andrew

EDIT: i forgot pH which is about 7.2

Is he laboured breathing or gasping.
It sounds like whitespot to me if there tiny white dots. sometimes they can look abit fluffy.

Looks a bit like cracked sea salt, damn it i went to wharf aquatics again today and didn't buy anything

EDIT: breathing isn't laboured

Not looking good if he's finding it hard to breath as once whitespot affects the gills fish rarely make it.
Is it possible to load a pic of him onto the site.
Trying to find some whitespot pictures.

Im just uploding a photo to photobucket altough its taking an age, breathing isn't laboured.

The photo isn't the best quality as my flash is on charge so its a bit blured

If you are unsure post the pic in tropical discussion.
I've only ever had whitespot once and it looked like that.

crap, and all the shops are shut and i have no meds, and im going away tomorrow. Shall i up the temp with no meds or will that not help, just speed up the life cycle and increase the number of the parasite?

I wouldn't raise the temp till you get the med.
Just increase aeration for now.
Do you know anybody who keeps fish near where you live who might have the whitespot med.

can regular table salt be used for salt baths or not?

andrew

Can't really use salt with plecs they don't tolerate it to well.
