If I Got 3 Of These...

5 gallons is a nice-sized home! :) A few silk plants (although Java Ferns, Java Moss, or Water Sprite is also cheap and easy to grow) and a thin layer of gravel or a bare bottom would be great. You could also add a small terra cotta pot to each tank for a cave (each costs about $0.25).

I would not recommend sand if you think gravel is a pain. OMG. Doing weekly water changes with sand is the closest thing to hell that I've experienced :p! If you like the look, most pet stores sell very fine natural colored gravel that looks just as good, and won't take so long to clean out. As for a heater, Wal*Mart sells Junior heater that are 7.5 watts and safe for a 5 gallon, and they only cost $6 each. You will need a thermometer for each tank to monitor the heater.

I have one of those Walmart heaters. I get irritated with it because it doesn't have a thermostat so when I turn on the light, which heats the tank a little bit, the heater just keeps going and the temp gets too high. And on a warm day, the tank gets too hot. If you don't have a light, and your house is always temperature controlled, then they're probably fine for a 5 gallon tank, though. :good: My house just doesn't meet those specs, so I'm looking for a cheap, small heater with a thermostat. I don't think there is such a thing.

Hi. I had thought it broke down the chloramines within 24 hours. Sorry for confusing/misleading anyone. I guess I should buy some dechlor now as my water has no chlorine, but it does have chloramines! :(

Thanks for letting me know!!!

Thanks for the help, everyone! Could I maybe use something like glass marbles in the tanks..? I think they would be 10x easier to clean.

Hey. I've never used glass marbles in the betta tanks, but I DO imagine they'd be easier to clean. Not as easy as bare bottomed tanks, but easier than gravel :)

I just don't like bare bottomed, lol. I'm weird like that. I like a bit of decoration. Wonder where I could get some glass marbles.

I like my WM heaters a lot, they just bump up the room temp about 3-4*. I turn it off in the summer, when my house is like 75*+ and I don't use it in tanks that have lights. The KK's don't have lights at all.

I definitely used to have to have "substrate" on the bottom, now I like bare tanks better! It's so much easier to syphon the bottom out every day, it takes about 1 minute. However, for pet Bettas I understand that it's more fun to make their tank look fancy :p... glass marbles look really nice, and they're cheap. You can get them at WM, Petsmart/Co, and even Pier 1 (make sure they're aquarium-safe).

Also, forgot to add that river rocks look good too.

Okay! ^^ I dunno if I need a heater or not though, just because our house is usually a good temperature, and the bettas seem to like the room temp pretty well. I'll have to look for some of the rocks. MUCH easier to clean than gravel. The sad thing is I think I'm going to have to do one tank at a time, while the others have smaller ones. Sebastian will be first, since he's the first betta.

River stones make nice stuff to put on the bottom I use it in Miko's bowl:

Wal-mart has river rocks and all colors of glass gems. They are in craft section.

Ok, thanks. Now to start saving for the stuff.
