I know you said you're not able to paint the back of the aquarium, but you can do it with acrylic paint. Once on it provides a nice background, and if you don't like it, it's actually very easy to remove. The paint literally peels away from the glass. You won't even need to do much scraping. Otherwise, another suggestion would be to use plastic wrap. Put it on the glass, making sure there are no wrinkles (It can be secured using regular scotch tape), and then paint the plastic wrap. That way, if you want to remove the backing, just peel off the plastic.
