You really need to post your water stats!

0.25-0.5 ammonia is not too good for the fish. As said above, test the water for the other stats beacause thats the only way we can tell that it's not due to water quality problems.

i tried testing the water stats and discovered that they had expired, and the tests gave messed up results. they didn't change color when they were supposed to.
i can't get to the store today, so what can i do?

Water change and increase aeration till you know your water stats.

BGK was bad before water change

Until we know your full water stats all I can suggest is a water change.
Add the med back to the water removed.

Api, and tetra.
The only api test kits that not very good is the nitrate one.
