USA,
I bought two swordtail females a couple weeks ago. After quarentining them I put them into my new 55. Well one of the females all of a sudden got ich. So I put her back into the quentine tank. She did, but themn some more fish in my tank now have the ich. I put the blue danios into the QT, but after seeing that the syndontis, rainbow shark, and female krib had some dots on them I decided to treat the whole tank.

I used Ick Clear by Jungle. I only did it once, raied the temp, and a 25 percent WC, they are doing better today, but still have the ich.

I was wondering how many more times I should treat the tank before it is all cleared up.

and two, when I put the danios back into my 55, how should I clean the QT so that there will be no more ich in it? It just has some gravel, no plants.

I used Ick Clear twice on my tank... and after noticing that everything was being stained blue, I'm going to the store to get something else.

I'm not an expert ...

First .. this site has some great info about Ich ... so check it out :) .

Second - With Ich it is always best to treat the tank ... not the fish per say .. in fact the white spots are not affected by the medicine ... after the white spots fall in a day or so they will produce a swarm of free living Ich parasites that will be able to attack your fish ... these are the buggers the medication or poison will kill...

It's best to treat the whole tank as soon as you confirm an Ich attack.

The free living parasites will die if they do not find a fish host in about two days ... so the quarantine tank will clean itself if there are no fish in it for several days .. also temps above 86 are lethal to Ich... so blast the heat up in the quarantine tank .. No fish ofcourse.

At noramal temps Ich will take seven days to complete it's life cycle ... so worst case ... from the time the last spot falls off ... more ot less new spots could show up seven days later .. at elevated temps that would happen in a shorter time. Most treatments involve keeping the medication at an effective level for at least 7 days maybe even 14 days in an attempt to catch hatching swarms of Ich ... my last bout with ich took that much time.

Watch closely keep notes on the number of spots and when they disapear.

I'm not familiar with the "Ick clear ' product.

Good Day ... B)

well the danio only has 1 spot left, the shark only had one, none now, and the syndontis still has a bunch.

First make sure your fish can handle some salt, 95% can. Then raise the temperature of the tank to 88 degrees for a week.

Ich will be gone.

my tank temp will not raise, I have tryed, but it doesnt go higher than 74 because they are in the basement. It is not cold in there, but the temp wont go higher.

do you know any other meds? This med is going to make me broke, 10 tablets, and I will need to use them like 7-14 days, that is so much money.

I have had several outbreaks of Ich, usually when I add mollys or loaches!
Anyways I agree 100% with the above also I was told to leave the light on all the time when treating as the parasites only move when the light is on. The parasite also like to hide in the corners of the tank so clean syphon out the corners. I also had a lump of bog wood and after a few days it too was covered in small white spots so watch out for that too. I usually buy a liquid and add that to the tank, I think it is some sort of dye, dont know what it does to the parasites but usually after 10-14days of treatment it clears them up.
Remember to remove any charcoal as this will filter out the medication and also increase oxygenation as the dye will make the levels drop.
one last point I had shrimp in my tank and had to remove him when treating, any apparently elephant nose fish (and the rest of their species!) are very sensitive to medication so what out for that, if you have any sensitive fish treat with 1/2 the dose.
I remember the first time I had Ich and I was pannicking but I have had about 6 over the past few years and most timesit clears up with the treatments and the fish survive, though might be more prone to another attack!

Why won't the tank raise above 74 F ?? Thats a bit cool ... Ich will have a longer cycle at that temp ... maybe 10 days or more ... much longer to treat.

What size heater do you have ?? Room temp ? Tank temps over time ?? Do you have a hood ??

I never tried the salt treatment sounds interesting ... How much salt ?? ... Last time I used Aquari Sol at 86 F for 7 to 14 days .. it contains Copper ... but your tank water needs a kH above 40 ppm .. and a test kit for copper should be used I had about .40 ppm in the water.

Good Day ... B)
