All water companies can and will flush the pipework with chemicals to clean them. As the chemicals are not hazardous to humans they do not have to give any prior warning of this, they are however hazardous to some aquatic life.
Other additives are often added too (such as flouride) which is something you wouldn't test for but may cause damage. As Steelhealr says, pure water is the way to go.
