What kind of coffee mugs or cups or pots can you put in your freshwater aquariums, anybody know??

I don't want to put a coffee mug in there if it will leak out some wierd chemicals and kill my fish!!!

Thanks (in advance ;o)

hmm i dont know as to the effect of second hand coffie mugs if its glased potery i would have thaught it wouldnt leak anything it depends on how it was made some have paint that i cant garantee wont leak out the bottom in some way where the mug becomes pourus. as for pots if they are un coloured then they would be similar to bricks and lots of people put those in. allmost ironically you would have to boild the pot to clean it i think. see what the others say but i recon it would not have any considerable effect on the water i mean we have to drink out of them dont we?

Guys

I use small up-turned flower pots in 2 of my tanks for breeding and cover purposes. My Parrot Fish and Convict Cichlids have made no complaints so far. In fact the Convicts recently had 30 fry. :D

I cleaned the pots and let them soak in tank water before placing them in and have had no issues with water quality or dis-colouration.

To be safe I would do as Nik mentioned and get new (not used) flower pots to use as caves. I tend to shy away from anything that has been painted/glazed (unless it is bought from the lfs, and even then I'm leery) as I'm always afraid some chemical will leach out of them.

Hi MrV

I have a Blood Parrot already, and I LOVE HIM DEARLY!!!
He is the sweetest, funniest, most full-of-life fish I have ever had!!! I recommend them to EVERYONE!!!

Hey, we buy hybrid roses, right. We buy hybrid raspberry bushes. People are cloning DONKEYS for crying out loud, and it's called SCIENCE, ya right! -_- :X :-( :-(

I just think Polly is fabulous and I get tired of defending myself.....sorry MrV.

And yes I know that they are dyed, but ..... but.......well I have no arguement for that one. It is wrong and I LOVE the natural color of Blood Parrots more than the dyed versions. But people would be surprised to learn ALL the fish that actually get dyed and sold at LFS. I will try and get a list and post it so everyone knows it's not the only fish out there that is treated badly by their makers and keepers :-( :*)

While I dont necessarily agree with making hybrids, I have seen blood parrots in the lfs. I think they are kinda cute. They look like they are smiling all the time. If I have room for a bigger tank, I would get one.
Whether or not its moral, I think its still our responsibility to take care of them. they are a life form.

You cant compare hybrid roses to a disgustingly deformed man made freak of a fish, they cant eat properly because they have a deformed mouth and many have no tail and other fins missing.

Hey Catfish Crazy....do you own one??

Have you ever owned one?

If the answer is no....then why not get one, fall in love with it and then talk about the Blood Parrots, because then you will really know what they are like. And you will know that the problems Blood Parrots have are seen only a tad more than problems you'd get with other fish, which is expected.

My parrot fish Polly eats better than ANY other fish in the tank, believe me. And he can wiz around the tank almost faster than my Silver Dollars, whom are like Cheetah's in the water.

I understand your concerns, but if you don't mind.....how about telling me the names of all of the fish you keep. I bet you 20 bucks I can find out some information on how they are made, colored or kept that would turn your head 180 degrees.

Look for my upcoming topic called:

Hybrid and Colored Fish......what we all should know!!!

  :D  I've seen Polly and he's a lovely fish and I've heard stories of his antics. So he's a hybrid, so what! I'm not saying it's right to mess around with nature that way, but that is a moot point. The fish has already been made. And just because he's a hybrid, does that mean he should'nt be loved? Instead of being critical of people who have these types of fish, why not give helpful advice. After all isn't that what this forum is all about. Fish Rule!

Hi

Bettaqueen :hi: To the fourm.

As with alot of aspects of fish keeping, there are two camps. One who think Parrots and Flower horns are the great, and one that hate the fish. No amount of debate will convince them to swap sides.
I think that they sholud not exist, thats my opinon

i was told and ive recently read anything that contains limestone shouldnt be used........n coffee mugs are ceramic....but does that contain any kind of plaster which contains limestone?

just thinkin.....if ur gonna use them varnish them first with that special varnish stuff that u use on bog wood to stop the tannin....personally id use terracota pots

i just read that recently.....hope it helps

Hello BettaQueen!!!!!! Welcome..........tee hee!!!

Tek, thanks for the advice.....NO limestone for sure!

I saw some pictures of a woman's tank that had bathroom pieces in it. What I mean is, like the cup and toothbrush holder, tissue holder. I think they are some some of plastic??

Why on earth would i want to put one in any of my tanks? If i could find any small enough i would use them as food for my shovel nose and snakehead though :grr: .

As for the fish i keep i would be very interested to know if any have been interfered with so here is a list,

Sorubim lima (duck billed catfish)
Channa orientallis (ceylonese green snakehead)
Bala sharks
Satanoperca jurapari
Coius microlepis (siamese tiger fish)
Pim pictus
Hoplosternum thoracatum
Peacock eels
Polypterus ornatipinnis
Polypterus senegalus
Synodontis soloni
Violet gobie dragon
Potamorrhapis guianensis (freshwater needle fish)
Monocirrhus polyacanthus (south american leaf fish)

And many many more that i cant be bothered to list but that should do for starters :D

no problemo my good man

i went to get an ornament recently and on closer inspection it was made from limestone.....but it was glazed......but if they glaze flakes and comes off the fishies have had it....so i got some rainbow rock instead

hope whatever u choose looks cool
