Not nagging hear or anything here but do any of you keep axololtls? Look on http/axolotl.org/ and they say that such a tank is fien fo them. MAny people have succesfully kept happy axolotls in such sized tans. Provide goode enough filtration,dont overcrowd the tank with decor and give them places to roam and hide you shall have happy axies. Axolotls dont swim(occasionally they pinball up and down the tank) they walk most of the time. Soemthing that swims LOGICALLY needs more room than something that walsk as walking is slower. Dont get me wrong,they need plenty of room to walk.
I have two of these guys in a 2ft tank. Look around on the net, on forums specially dedicated to caudatas and you will run into info from proper specialists and owners who write from personal experience,info from scientists and the like...not copying from rubbish false webstites that just put a tank down like 3ft as any fish/animal will do well in such a size tank.
Obviously,the bigger the better, but they manage perfectly well in such a tank. Jsut that they CAN get to 12" doesnt mean they necessarily will,most get to 10". Just that thsi sounds big doesnt mean they need a big tank..please post if you KNOW what your talkign about!

yes I've got a happy females in a 22" x 15 x 15, and she's doing well on gold fish pellets, earth worms, odd fish, and she love's river shrimp.

She used to have a male in there but when i saved some goldfish they nibbeled his gills and he never truly recovered stupid mistake as i know this and told the missed they had to go by then weekend

i have kept axolotls before, i KNOW what im on about. mine was about 10-11 inches, at most 2 inches smaller then the lengh of the tank.
that sand would be fine james, just wash it well before hand,
as i said before, a 24x12 tank is too small i belive. and stick by what i said, just because some other people say what you want to hear james, doesnt always make it the best choice.
because the axolotls dont often leave the floor, floor space is nessary. all axolotls prefer caves, hides, plants and decor to climb over. so a bigger tank is needed, unless you want an unhappy axolotl james?

I dont know much, but a person at my LFS told someone that if you leave them without water their gills close up and they become a lizard and can not be returned to water. I assumed it was B.S. When the owner was somewhere else i told the people not to buy it because he was making it up.

They can get 12", they need the same tank setup as goldfish, thats about all i know sorry

This information is not as BS as you think, however it's not about axolotls, it's about Waterdogs, if left with low or no water they become a Salamander.

im confident that my tank will be fine for a baby one, once it hits the 6-7" mark i will upgrade tank. sound ok fishboy?

it sounds fine IF you do upgrade later in its life.
but for now you not going to do anything apart from put a axolotl in that 24x12 tank, but atleast plant it and add hides. feed it well and try to give it the best care.

There is a fish shop on Victoria Road in glasgow that has had these every time I've been in - only about 2.5" long though. Couldn't believe it when the store owner said those cute little things grow up to 12" - I can't imagine what a full grown one would look like in the flesh... lol
