okay this is annoying me now my tank parameters are fine, i added 6 torpedos and 12 bunches of twisted vellas on friday and they where all doing fine, until this morning when i find all my torpedos including the two torpedos that where originally in my tank for months dead also, the fish look very white in some cases red with blood as if been eaten, i am not sure if this is an illness with this species as all over fish are perfectly fine,

or has it been my plec eaten them while the sleep or even my angel fish with appear to be starting to breed could they have attacked during the night? i have 15 cores 1 plec and 4 angels now thats my stocking

it happened after 2am as we checked them then,

this is the last time i am going to get torpedoes as much as i love these fish and they looked fantastic just keep dyeing on me :(

WARNING here is the pic of my dead fish maybe someone cal help me see what was the cause?

A real shame that :( Bad luck, its never nice to lose fish.

From the info you've provided there, it 'could' be something to do with the plants you introduced? The two were fine for months, you introduce more, with the plants, and they all die?

Or, more simply, these fish may have had some form of illness/stress related disease that also affected the resident two (though in such a small space of time I think this to be unlikely).

did you take a sample of the water? How were they behaving, and how were your angels interacting with them?

thank you for a quick reply, the angels where acting fine during the day squabbling with each other, but i did notice they pushed my plus out of its cave at one point, i only fed my plec last night with cucumber on a fork
could it have been that?,

i did a water change yesterday and tested the water parameters after and was all 0 across except nitrate which was 40 :)

with the torpedos behaviour it was amazing tbh as soon as i added them in they all swam in a group all happy no fighting what so ever, eating very well,

thank you again, i hope if it was a decease then it only speeds to that species

:RIP

Redline Torpedo Barbs have a mega-sensitive reputation to water chemistry changes, so on the advice of my LFS I have always given them a lengthy (~3 hours) drip acclimitisation when bringing them home or moving tanks.

Sometimes plants can have nasty chemicals on them when bought, so besides rinsing them to remove any pest snails, it pays to give them a good rinse to remove at leat most of anything they may be covered in. From what you have posted, something from the plants is my best guess right now.

okay thank you for quick reply as well, tbh i know these fish are hugely sensitive it is a shame, :( maybe once the tank is more settles i MAY thing about getting a few more again in months time and i shall do what you say acclimatise them slowly

is there anything i can do to prevent my other fish from getting effected of as they are not effected yet will they be okay?

EDIT - i did the 50% water change after adding the plants

What a shame!

You've two new factors here: newly added fish or newly added plants - assuming nothing else has changed, it must be one of these.

I'm hazarding a guess at the plants having something on them that the torpedoes were particularly sensitive too, the new ones especially from the stress of being moved perhaps. You might never work it out.

Will you get anymore?

Just have to wait and see now I guess, but yes as I said, I think most likely culprit was the new plants.

i really really adore these fish so yes i really want more but i am going away for 4 months and leaving the tank in the gd hands of my gf so i shall get them after when i get back i am here for 4 weeks at the moment thats why i got 6 more to finish my stocking before i go away just fingers crossed my other fish will be fine

thank you all for the posts i shall presume its the plants i just gota keep an eye on my angela now :S

Same thing happened to me and it was torpedo barbs, cherry barbs, neons and angels to start with and it happened in hours. If all your checks seem fine then it could be a ph crash, A toxin that has got in your tank off a peice of wood or plant or a treatment you've used in the aquarium. Mine died very rapidly, the fish shop told me that it could even have been down to my water board as they had been replacing all the pipes in my area but I think something got in my tank by accident. My other fish were all huddled in the corner on top of one another like they were cold

I reckon it was poison in my tank or so I got all the fish out into buckets and my other tank and stripped everything and washed it all including the substrate. I rinsed every grain of gravel in a bucket until it was sparkling clean and washed my filters out with fresh dechlorinated water. My wood and fake plants were washed then I pored boiling kettle water on them. I got every bit of water out of my huge tank and cleaned it without chemicals then put everything back and defiled it with a hose of half hot water and then half cold. Then I dechlorinated it and ran my filters and heater till it was right. I started at 7am and was done by lunch what fish I had left were back In The tank by 2pm after i had tested everything including the ph and everything has been great so far. Still do water tests every day though I case you go into a mini cycle and I suggest getting some seachem prime or nutrafin cycle.

This is just my experience So what happened in your tank might be different causes but if your other fish are looking effected then I would get them out of there

ash thank you, i shall keep an eye at the moment all my other fish are fine happy swimming and all looks normal just was strange to see only torpedos :( especially if it was poison or water parameters wrong i would expect other fish to act strange like in your case i remember when i started out all my fish started bobbing on the surface torpedos where the first to do it, i was like #136### then the angels and i had clown loaches back then and then they did the same i was like #136### found the issue and not had it since but thank you i shall take a note to that i just hope it dosnt come down to that :D

hope all the fish that servived are okay in your tank :)

I think i just found out what killed my torpedos :'(, my hand went into the tank when testing the water and the i was like this is bait hot, look on the side of the tank the temp strip was saying 26 green 28 blue i then check both my external temp thingy's and one was set to 28 :'( must have nudged it during my water change or someone is out to kill my fish in this house :'( stupid heater's, this could explain the sudden erg for my angels to breed as well
