i was reading up and they said that after giving birth the mom's don't eat fry until about 1 to 48 hrs because they weren't hungry!!! is that true???
I have heard that the moms aren't usually hungry for 24 or 48 hours after birth. It would make sense then that she wouldn't eat the fry until then. Don't know for sure though. I also seem to recall seeing something saying the moms won't eat the fry, but other fish in the tank will. Don't know if that's true or not.

Helpful, ain't I? :D

I know this is probably not normal but,I am going to tell you what happened less than a month ago........All the fish I have now, guppies and mollies were born in my tanks so they are very used to me.One day I watched all these male gups, about three or four following this preg, female.I realized the female is giving birth.I first thought the males were trying to eat the fry, which is kinda rare since my adults dont usually eat their fry,Then I realized they just wanted to mate with her.
Didnt know what to do so,I picked up a net and try to put the female inside the net while she was giving birth.Even after placing her inside the net and isolating her from those sex maniacs, they were trying to get inside. So I decided to drop some flakes and see if they would leave her along....It worked. But I also realized that some of the flakes went though the mesh and while this female was giving birth, she was also picking up some flakes.
I know this sounds unbelivable but, that really happened.I had never seen a female eating while giving birth! But I guess it could happen.

My guppies and molly females will eat while spawning. In fact, my molly fry are at risk from mom while dropping into the bottom of the breeder box. That is why I use a floating breeder box rather than the net (I have tried both). The max number of molly fry I have been able to save from mom is 16.

My guppies will sometimes give birth turn around and eat the fry. IT would make sense a hormone they release to lessen their appetite but it doesn't have complete success!!

i know, but my husband say's it's life and let it take place but when i see fish eating other fish i just can't stand it, it's like humans eating each another ewww  but it is fish and fish will be fish i guess

Cassandra,
One of my Female Guppy just gave birth last night. Three in a row, the last time I watched before going to bed... and in a nanosecond she turned around and devoured her fry as if the pregnancy meant insta' food.
I feel ya!
