is it just me or do things like gravels and general tank decor not fit into any of the boards we already have?

its just a thought, as i think this would be a good addition as choosing a substrate or decorations or even DIY decorations can fit into loads of category's.

what are your thoughts? vote in the poll.

I think so, yes. Decorating a tank is a very important part of fish keeping, and getting a tank to look natural is very hard.
Also, it may help categorize those "can put _____ in ma tank?" and "switch to sand?" frequently occuring threads.

yes i agree, i dont know if youve seen my terraces topic? that could go in dIY and planted section (as its a planted tank but its also DIY)

I think that's probably getting a little too specific for a forum. We have a planted section that deals mainly with tank decor as plants are certainly decor. Obviously, it is mainly about plants but substrate could surely be discussed there, especially the ones specifically made for plants such as Eco Complete, florite, etc.

Bogwood and driftwood along with hardscape get a lot of attention under the freshwater general. As RDD said, the substrate really belongs in the plants area. All that would leave for decor is an interior decorating approach. Although it can be interesting, I don't think there would be enough traffic to justify it. Low traffic sections tend to fall to disuse because people get frustrated by nobody answering their questions.

i wouldnt say to specific as everyone pretty much uses decor but not everyone has a betta fish and theres a section for them so i vote yes.

i think we need one, but as said above substrates could be catalogued in the planted section, but people that hang around that forum specialize (generally) in planted tanks and whats needed to run one(like specific substrates, but the bog standard substrates dont fall into this category.

personnally i think there would be enough traffic, i for one dont hang around in a specific board, i view the "new posts" and then help out where i can

Ok then, why not make it a sub-forum of the planted section?

that would be good, but personally i think a decor forum with a few subforums so it would look like this

Decor:
plants and planted tanks
substrates
Ornaments and decoration

I agree with truck on this, when I needed answers about bogwood I hadn't a clue really where to put it. There are several people recently I have seen ask about backgrounds how to install them etc. Sand and gravel questions pop up everywhere. I dont think the DIY section should be changed though.

Is there really that much that can go in such a forum?

I'm sure this has been suggested before and the consensus was that anything on general substrate and decor should remain in TCC.

If you are after the "natural" look (has anyone actually looked at what large parts of the amazon look like?) then the chances are you will end up in the planted section. If it is related to keeping a certain fish then we have the specific sections for different fish to ask. If it is just a general decor/substrate question then TCC is the best place to put it.

A decor forum (especially with further subforums) is a ghost section in the making.

I voted no. Substrate and decor vary with the ecosystem one is trying to create. As such, the type of substrate/decor should be discussed in the forum section that your tank is....ex. Mbuna tank goes under African cichlids....best place to ask about substrates for them b/c the people there will be able to give you the best feedback for that type of fish. :good:

Just my .02 :D
