I hardly ever see my clown loaches. They are always under their piece of drift wood. Once in awhile one will come out to re-position its self than right back under the wood. For all I know they are dead under there. I dont even know when or how they eat. Should I be worried or is this just the way clowns are?

they still not use to your tank. Its hard to get them back to their cave once they get use to its surrounding(if ur tank has more fish they'll feel more safer and will hang out even sooner) . Mine come to the surface for food during feeding, they dont act like bottom feeder at all.

They are obviously not happy with the setup Or they have only been added to the tank in the past few days,

What size tank do you have and how many are there?

Defrost a prawn & throw it in there, you'll see them then!!!

Really????

Yes really, they love 'em.

How long have they been in this tank? It could take months for them to get used to their surroundings fully. I would ask the same questions as Davo86, how many do you have & how big is the tank? You need at least 5 in a tank of minimum 50G for small loach with a view to moving them on when they get to 4"-5" to avoid stunting them.

I have 4 of them in a 45gal. I moved a few months ago and ever since I moved into my new place is when they started being anti-social. I did just re-do my tank last week to add sand instead of gravel. I did lift up their hiding drift wood yesterday and they all seem to be healthy and alive so I guess thats all I can ask for.

I think they'll be fine, it sounds like they just need to adjust to their new surroundings.

Chuck in some bloodworm or a tab (novotab or variety wafer etc) just after you turn your lights out then step right back from the tank so they cant see you in the evening/at night, they do tend to be nocturnal, especially when feeding, my small loachies only come out after i turn the lights off, they are starting to get more adventurous now but it has taken a good month or so.

45gals isn't going to be big enough in the long run. I hope you're saving up for a larger tank.

As for them hiding. Ours did the same thing for the longest time. They hid under the wood and would rarely come out. But they did eventually get used to the tank, and now they're out all the time. As IMCL said, mine don't act anything like bottom feeders. They swim with the other fish and are just all over the tank.
