Hi I am now getting nitrite readings off the chart(the test water goes purple straight away) and my ammonia is now all gone in 24 hours, I am now going to test every 12 hours for the ammonia, but how much of the ammonia should I be dosing ? I started off getting the level up to 4 ppm and then to 3 ppm how much is right now, thanks in advance!

What are your nitrate levels?????

When I was doing the Ammonia stage(Add Ammonia wait for it to get to zero) I was dosing 5ppm.
During the High Nitrites stage I was dosing 3-4ppm ammonia once a day.
Now that im waiting a week for the full cycle in 12 hours im dosing 3ppm a day

Hi Tracey B, I have checked my NitrAte and I can tell you I wasn't looking forward to all that again from the first time I tested the water in the tank and the water from my tap water (my arm is very sore. But I am shocked my tap and my tank water back to 23rd (6 days) ago showed 40ppm and now showing 5.00ppm ???????
Any idea whats going on ?

Once my ammonia was 0 I g in 12 hours and nitrites were purple I dosed to 2 and then did a water change to bring nitrites down. Then after that they were both 0 ing in 12 hours. My nitrate went from 40 to 10 for some reason but it's fine. It's showing the cycle is working. Your nearly there

[/quote) Do I need to do a water change ? I thought I just carried on adding ammonia till the nitrItes dropped ? I figured out I wasn't doing the NitrAte test right, banging the bottle no 2 got my results for tap and tank, my tap 40ppm and tank 160+ ppm

Also I was doing the nitrate test wrong, I now have banged the second bottle several tmes while shaking longer than the specified 30 seconds (2 mins just to be sure) and my results are 40ppm tap and 160+ tank water, someone had done a water change when receiving high NitrAtes do I need to do this, thanks for your time to give help.

my tap nitrate is 40 too, i wouldn't worry about it, I would keep the ammonia dosed up to 3ppm from now on and you might want to do a full tank water change to get rid of some of those nitrates which are known to cause a cycle to stall if they get too high. just dechlorinate new water and redose. easy :good:

Thanks Tizer, I am 11 days in, I followed your advice and started from scratch rather than use a friends filter media to get a quicker cycle. This water change, when would be a good time to do it ? I need to consider the NItrItes ??
Also I use Seachem prime to treat the water, I remember you said to use a different one, while cycling ??
Thanks Mate

prime is fine mate, can do the water change any time you want, ditch 75% then it leaves you with some nitrites in the left over water for the bacs to munch on and brings down the nitrate a lot. simples.

The nitrites take a lot longer than the ammonia to be dealt with. I'm cycling a new 260L tank now and I'm in my third week, The ammonia is going down very quickly and I keep adding more every day, but the nitrites continue to be off the planet. This is absolutely normal. You have to be patient and suddenly the nitrites will be dealt with and your test will suddenly indicate that the nitrites are sorted. Patience!!

with u tizer. i did a 70% water change in middle of cycle it helpped and cycled a bit faster
