The C. romani I have are very active when food is available, anything from flake to pellets to frozen bloodworm, although these are not the most attractive of the genus. You might want to look at C. perugiae, which can be available from time to time. Again, these tend to hide during the daylight, but will be tempted out by food, and if you add blue or red LEDs to your tank after lights out, you will see them at their most active.
You might find a single C.schultzi as an oddball in a shipment of possibly C.perugiae or C.reticulatus, but neither are 'common' in your average LFS, which is sad as they are, as you have seen, one of the most attractive of the genus.
Another similar auchenipterid you might see from tie to time is Entomocorus gameroi, as with most fish in the genus, easily sexed by the sexual dimorphism found in the anal fin (similar to the livebearers), and these are actually active during the day - much like the glass cats, but IMO much nicer.
Anyway, good luck - depending on where you are based, Peir in Wigan, or Wildwoods in Enfield are both renowned for stocking a great variety of unusual catfish, and if your LFs has an account with Hardys, get them to keep an eye on the lists.
