I have 8 tanks set up all with a different look to them (see my siggy link). I have a wide range of fish from chili rasboras, pygmy cories, tetras of all sorts, rainbowfish and dwarf puffers up to Figure 8 puffers and bumblebee gobies housed ina low end brackish set up. It's my hobby and I live it to the full.

I adore my tanks immmensely. I love having eternally pruned fingers. It doesn't bother me that my life seems to revolve around tank maintenance and making sure I don't run out of dechlorinator

Rarely have I thought of downsizing - my dreams have always consisted of the next tank I can get to extend my collection - unless it's been to get a bigger tank.

So, guess how hard it is for me to now downsize for real!

Why on earth am I doing this? What could honestly make me take the plunge and actually pack up some of my lovely tanks and look to rehome some of my fish?

Weeeeeeeeeell....

I wanna go marine! :hyper:

In order to devote QT to a marine set up and the tanks I choose to keep/justify the running costs/make room for a new system I have to downsize.

I want to keep my 2 puff tanks and the community tank, the new cube tank is staying too and possibly the shell dwelling cichlids which have been moved to a different tank now. That means I am losing 4 tanks (3 if I keep the cichlids)

I'm finding it hard to do, but at the same time I am excited (and a bit nervous) about entering the world of marine fishkeeping!

So nervously excited that I have created this thread

Am I ill/mad/wise?

I'll leave you all to decide! :shout: :hey:

I'm confused, why downsize, just go marine and have less time and less money, you know it makes sense :good:

Wow.

I'd love to have a reef tank. Even if it only had living rocks and a few clown fish in it. I could watch the swaying of anenames' for many hours.

I hope it all goes well for you. Its a step Im hoping to take one day - but I will still need to have my old freshwater friends in the living room too!

I wonder if you have fish to re-home then. Maybe some people local to you may read this and offer homes.

My betta is mentioned on the betta section. He comes with a mature 20L Arc tank

The only other fish I'd be considering rehoming would be the shell dwelling cichlids (if I can bear to part with them)

I am going to go to the upper limits (size wise) on the nano marine tank side. I'd love to start off with a live rock/soft corals/a few inverts and one or two fish set up. I need a cleaner shrimp I can call Jacques

I truely cant understand why people want to pay good money to fill a tank with fancy rocks, and salt goes on chips not in water.

First dibs on the dwarf cichlids (Neolamprologus multifasciatus) if you need a new home for them :)

I truly can't understand why people want to pay good money to set up enormous tanks that aren't even in their houses and fill them with great ugly brutes of fish which eat everything in sight..........

(not true actually) but horses for courses isn't it!

The reason for fish houses is to get away from moaning other halfs and pre teen children, the huge tank is to drown yourself in when it all gets too much

Variety is the spice of life and it wouldn't do for us all to like the same things :hey:

Why not have both.

The big tanks and big fish in the shed/garage.

I also have a Nano Reef in my lounge. The rock is full of loads little bits of life, small starfish, Worms, snails, copepods plus swaying corals, and colourful small fish. Hermits are great to watch and my cleaner shrimp pics dirt from your hands. There is always something to watch.

I will say thought. I feel my single nano is as much work to maintain as the 11 other fresh water tanks put together. With larger systems and more money there is a lot of technology that will do a chunk of the work for you.

There are not enough hours in the day for me to fit in my long working day and tank maintenance sadly.

The betta is going to a good home on Saturday and the cichlids are going to another good home in a few weeks. The other reason for downsizing is to balance out my already substantial electricity bills!

I don't want to stretch myself too thinly and I can always turn one or two more of my freshwater tanks to marine at some time in the future :D

I have my puff tanks and my community plus a tetra tank and another cube tank upstairs to keep running and then I can decide what marine tank to go for :D

Just to let you know, In all seriousness... If you get rid of that Figure 8 puffer tank I will kill you and then skin you...

Marine will be worth it, so your doing the right thing, that is if your keeping your F8 tank :D
