I Know That Your Not Supposed To But What's The Reason?

okay so i no that ur not supposed to mix betta's and gouramis in the same tank but i' just curious whats the reason for this, cuz they can crossbreed, the only reason i can think of is the aggression they have but so can female bettas go with gouramis in a tank?

female bettas are still aggressive. I think they are both Labyrinth fish who build bubblenests, and labyrinths are generally quite aggressive towards each other.

I've kept female bettas with paradisefish and with banded gouramis (C. fasciata). Come to think of it, I've also done it with dwarf gouramis. All of these set-ups were 20 longs are larger (20 long, 29 gallon, 33 gallon).

I think the key is having a heavily decorated/planted tank (I have to pull out plants every other week or I'd never see any fish).

Years ago you used to see a lot of 'gourami tanks' as their oxygen demands were low and thei swimming technique allowed good viewing.

I remember tanks with moonlight, croaking, opaline, dwarf and honeys all in together.

I've even seen some full grown kissing and giant guoramis, in ahuge planted restaraunt tank, surrounded by smaller 'shoals' of mixed gouramis.

However, I also remember from ymown experience how just one rogue fish, or one maturing adult, can become pugnacious or even violent, and terrorise the tank. So I think if you want to try it, have a sopare tank on stand by to remove victims/aggressors.

With enough size, decoration, and a lot of luck you can do a lot of things you're "not supposed to." I know a guy who's opinion is that with the right aquascaping and baring major size differences or lethal equipment, you can potentially keep any two species together if you can figure out how to keep them safe from each other and get well behaved specimens, and he's made a pretty good job of proving it. Sometimes "don't do it" is shorthand for "be ready to stop doing it if it doesn't work."

i learnt the hard way, i put a male betta in with my gouramis, and that night my beta was dead, all water parameters where fine and its the only fish that has died in my tank so i think it was to do with mixing the fish

I've got 2 females and one male betta in a small community tank with 4 sparkling gouramis and havent had an issue

Added 4 paradise fish to 3 spot gourami tank. Big mistake! He almost bullied them to death and I had to remove them after 20mins to save their lives. They're in with cories now.
