Hi all..
I was recently channel surfing when I came across an interesting science (ish) program about how stuff is made or works. It showed the renewability of soda cans, and how jelly candy is made using corn starch as the moulds... but then came a disturbing section on fish farming. Now, I thought I knew the ins an outs of fish farming aftr looking into it whilst studying for my degree (mainly looking at pollution and stress levels etc). This was showing how the farmers get the fry. This particular farmer was breeding trout. He picked an egg laden female and squeezed (yes, squeezed) her tummy really hard and squirted out the eggs into a bowl. He kept doing this for a minute... he then picked up a male and did the same with him, squirting the sperm into the same bowl. He then mixed it, rinsed it until the water went clear, put the eggs into empty soda pop bottles with tank water in and left them until the little black dot eyes appeared.
now, the keeping of the eggs wasn't what shocked me. It was the rough forced removal of the eggs and sperm that made me want to vomit - I swear I saw the female bleeding.
Just thought I'd share that with you as I'm currently at work (I work in a school science department) and I was sorting the DVDs/videos. I came across one on fish farming, and I watched it and NOTHING of the sort was shown. I just think this is cruel.
*sad fishy face*
