I Know Ill Sound Stupid...

The nice thing is that good little tanks like 5-6 gallons aren't very costly and are perfect for betta.

Excellent! That's also a good place to experiment with plants too. Get some nice low light plants. If you have a broad leafed plant the betta will sleep on the leaf like a little hammock.

yes wellit is better than little cups they keep them in and also at least im TRYING to heat it unlike my parents thatsay bettas dont need haet i tell them they do and so on
also im rescuing bettas from deaths by people who buy them wwith no knowledge of the fish and stick it in some thing super small or with fish that will kill or eat it
i may not even leave him in there!!!!!

Yes it is better than a cup but not by much. 1 litre is not a suitable long term home and I will not back down on this fact.
But I can see you are trying and its a nice idea to rescue fish from those ridiculous cups (all my bettas past and present have come from a pet shop that puts them in with very unsuitable tankmates, like gouramis and sharks!), but as I said there isn't much point if they are in a place that isn't really any better.
Anyway I see you are thinking about putting him in the five gallon. Do that, get some live plants like tcamos suggested and he will be much better off and will live longer too.
I suggest not getting any more (like you said you were planning on doing) until you can afford/have the space for 5 gallon tanks for them okay?

I apologise if I have offended you in any way, but I was under the impression that you didn't really care all that much, but clearly I have misinterpreted your intentions. Statements like "I want as many as I can" usually come from people who don't really care about proper care and welfare as long as they can have lots of pets, then they get bored after a while... hence why I got a little up in arms. I work for a shelter and I just don't like seeing the results of peoples impulses.

alright ill do that tcomas

okay ill do that kiwi
okay i wont
its okay you were just tring to protect fish kinda like me

also i have a question what should i use the cube for
thanks.gif
??????

Yes, concentrate on getting one betta, and giving it a really great home, rather than getting lots you can't really look after properly (although I admire your principles).

as for your 1l cube. It's really too small for anything; even shrimp, IMO. You could do a little aquascape with some moss and maybe a tiny anubias; you could put a small (pest type!) snail in there.

Here's one I did in a tiny little glass bowl; I think it's about 250mls!

as you can see, there's one Malaysian trumpet snail in there :)

i was wondering how i should go about heating a 1 liter or 1/4 gallon betta cube

there are some theo heaters with thermostat that are pretty small. please get your fish a bigger tank.
one thing you might want to do is get a steralite tub and fill it partially with water. submerge the heater on the bottom with suction cups. then put your smaller weighted tanks into the steralite tank.
i would do this if i was jaring small bettas. really though, get a bigger tank. if you are rescuing fish, just return them to the stores. they will take them.

??

That's great to hear you've decided to put him in the 5 gallon and not get any more till you can provide for them! Well done, I know its hard to resist getting more. They are an addicting fish.
I personally would love to have another male or two and a sorority again but right now I just can't afford it! Tanks in New Zealand are waaayyy more expensive than overseas... I can't afford $100 plus bucks for JUST an 8 gallon glass tank! No filter or heater included. Its heinous how much they cost here.
I don't think there is really anything you can keep in a 1 litre... Maybe just keep for transporting him or to put him in while cleaning his tank?

maybe
i have some niusence snails in there and wasnt thinking shrip at all till you brought them up and now i want them
trust me i will get more but not before i find space for thre very own 5 gallon!!
jashon im rescuing fish from the store why would i take them back?? please read the whole thread ask anyone here and you will see what the situaation is or maybe read the whole thread first!

But by buying betta from terrible conditions you are confirming what the shop already knows- that people will still buy them and they can make money from them. As soon as you buy a betta to "rescue" it (even though you have good intentions), you are only making space for the shop to bring in more betta or other fish to treat in a horrible way. It's horrible to walk away from them, but there's not much else you can do that won't encourage the shop to carry on. The best thing you can do is make a mature and formal complaint about the way the betta are being kept in their store so that they know that their costumers do not agree with their practices.

That's the horrible catch 22 of some fish shops. Even though I know what you are saying is 100% true I sometimes see a fish and know I can save it and that it will be dead in two days if I don't. I got my first green spotted puffer that way...from Wal-Mart! I knew it was wrong to encourage them but I just couldn't help it. He came over the glass and begged me...seriously begged me! It's such a hard emotional thing to just leave it. I've changed now and though it's hard I have the will power not to and to just not visit stores that have practices I hate. There is one LFS here I simply won't go to no matter what I need. Fortunately all the Wal-Marts here are removing their livestock slowly but surely they are getting the idea that this just isn't as easy to do as they think.

Sheesh! After reading all the things you guys post about where you get your betta fish from i'm so glad I only go to Jojo's I've once stepped foot in a petco because I heard about there $ per gallon sale but other then that I've only gone to jojo's they have this cool station where they keep I'd think about 20 variety betta fish a week, there not in cups but a custom acrylic betta condo it fits on the wall and they have a light strip over the top and bottom to keep them well lit and a heater that keeps all the water at around 78 which a filter making water flow gently through all of the betta rooms gently.

That's just awful how other places treat them D:

Oh, I totally agree tcamos, you'd have to be heartless not to care, and it is easier said than done. But I meant more about going back to a shop over and over again to rescue them, that's when it starts to encourage the shops too much I think.

I have heard that you can ask shops if they have any fish that aren't fit to be sold and would otherwise be euthanised. Some places will give you these sick or injured fish for free just to get them out of the way. I think it would be worth trying that first as that really would be rescuing a betta from a certain death :)

thank youbut im 12 and cant do that
i never buy from walmart
its like telling petco to hand out 5 dollor bills to the first 100 people that walk in those stores! they will never stop and if they did i wouldnt be able to get\afford bettas!i dont nessearilly* want a sick one one because it will be alot of work for me
*speling
