I have had my first death. It was a harlequin. I found it about foot away from the tank.

It must have jumped when I had the lid up on the hood earlier today.

I didnt realise they jumped. Has anyone elese experienced this?

I too lost a harlequin about a week, i still hvent found it,it was poorly and i presumed that the other fish had eaten it but maybe now im not 2 sure perhaps it jumped down the back of my tank!

My sister had a tiger barb disappear overnight and she still cannot find it. I told her it probably jumped out and the cat ate it because there is no way the community fish which is fed well would eat it up in a single day. It was a pretty big tiger barb about 1 inch.

You'd be surprised at how quickly fish will eat other dead fish. Espically if you have bottom feeders like cories etc.

She doesn't have any bottom feeders except a few small ghost shrimp. All the other fish are guppies, platies, gouramis, danios, minnows, and small barbs.

1 inch is actually a pretty /small/ tiger barb. They grow to 3 inches. Also, they generally shouldn't be kept with long finned fish such as guppies.

littlegs, sorry to hear about your Halrequin. But the truth is, almost every fish jumps. The only exceptions I can think of are most livebearers, and probably bottom feeders too. Try covering any holes you have with pieces cut from a milk carton.

i think it jumped when i had the hood lid open, as there are no other exits at he front of the tank.
2 holes at the rear but found the fish at the front.

It is not small when talking about the amount of meat the small omnivorous fish would have to eat in less than 18 hours. My sister had a cherry barb die awhile back and none of the fish even touched it. The tiger barbs don't nip at the fins of guppies in my sister's tank. All of the fish in her tank get along very well..you'd be surprised. ;)

Personally I've never had fish jump out from a tank. I did have a saltwater eel that climbed out of a tank though.

Yes sadly I had a few do that, have to be very careful when maintaining the tank, don't knock things on the tank there very jumpy, but mine have settled now, mainly when there new.

Yea, I had a freshwater eel before. I didn't even have it 24 hours before it got out. Found it shriveled up on the floor 2 ft away from teh tank in the morning. Could someone tell me if Kuhlie Loaches will try to escape? I'll be getting some in a few days and I don't want them dieing

Sorry to hear about your harlequin, littlelegs. I've read some of your posts and know how keen you are to get things right. I think a few people have experienced this problem at one time or another, so don't worry, it sounds as though you are doing just fine! :)

littlelegs,

Sorry about your loss. Have you checked your water parameters since he jumped? Might be a water quality issue.

I havent checked them today, but will do tomorrow.
I did change the tank background today though which involved moving the tank away from the wall for a while, so i suppose that could have upset them alittle.

I, Too, am sorry for your loss. I lost my first betta a few months ago--and we keep losing a few mollies here and there along the way--but also have seen our mollies give birth to many fry. The life cycle is so strange, yet magnificent--one loved one goes, and a new life enters the earth.

I still miss my first betta--he was quite a buddy and I honor those feelings as I encourage you to honor yours. I do now have another betta--who I'm getting to know, but I still miss that first one!

My condolences and prayers are with you.
